urging residents to lock their doors
tonight as they search for a man they
say is armed and dangerous.

Ayers was awakened by a loud boom and
the sound of shattering glass.

Someone had fired a single shot at
his home on Arnold's Valley Road.

wall, shattered the glass in this curio
cabinet and buried itself in another
wall ... Ayers and his family were
shaken up but unhurt.

Three hours later and just a few
miles away, a couple was camping on the
Belfast Trail in the Jefferson National
Forest, when someone approached their
tent and started shooting.

FLASHLIGHT IN AND STARTED SHOOTING.

and hand ... he's recovering in a
Roanoke hospital.

Near the campsite shooting, police
recovered this van ... stolen from
Northumberland County, with license
plates that were stolen from a car in
Surry County.

That's when they got a report of a
truck being stolen just down the road.

getting drenched, but some places got
really wet - and some places-- it was
even worse.

Here's what happened along Howbert
Avenue in Roanoke. The afternoon
thunderstorm

that rolled through may have been
brief, but it was strong enough to send
a maple tree across the roadway,
blocking the street.

Some of the limbs came down on two
cars, but the damage is believed to be
minor.

afternoon fire in Roanoke's North Ridge
Apartment Complex.

It broke out at about 1:30 here
at 52-12 Lancelot Lane-- off Cove Road.

No one was inside the building
when fire crews got there-

The fire did some damage
though... to at least three apartments.
Others were damaged by water.

Investigators are still trying to
figure out what caused the fire.. but
witnesses say they saw lighting hit the
apartment's roof.

GRAPHIC=Fatal Accident Memorial Day took a tragic turn for a

Georgia family overnight on Interstate
81 near Salem. Four family members are
dead, and five others injured.

This Morning Their G-M-C Suburban was headed south
around 2-30 a.m with nine people on
board.. . when the driver apparently
swerved to avoid a deer, then
over-corrected.

The vehicle left the highway and
flipped over several times, ejecting

many - if not all - of those who had
been inside.

State police identify the dead as
51-year-old Gabriel Castillo,
50-year-old Blanca Castillo, their son,
31-year-old Gamil Castillo, and Javier
Castillo, a boy believed to be under
ten years old. They are all from
Dalton, Georgia.

Two other adults and three children are
under treatment at Roanoke Memorial
Hospital.

Investigators say it appears few, if
any, of the nine people in the vehicle
were wearing seat belts.

accident in Bedford County has now
claimed three lives.

Sunday It happened yesterday afternoon
off of Nemmo NEE-mo Road oustide of the
Chamblissburg community.

Police say 25-year-old Josh
Serreno of Vinton was driving a Mustang
which crossed the center lane, crashing
into a pickup truck.

One of Serreno's passengers,
18-year-old Justin Brooks of Salem,
died at the scene.

Serreno and the truck's
passenger, 68-year-old Jason Higgins,
later died at the hospital.

Police say a 17-year-old girl
from Salem is still in the hospital.

General Shale- which currently operates
a mine in Blue Ridge- hasn't made a
"formal" proposal on the land yet.

It would have to go through the
planning commission and apply for a
special permit to re-zone the land.

prepared for the worse case scenario.

The historic circuit courthouse
in Fincastle was rebuilt after a fire
destroyed the original structure in
1970.

But, with so many cases...
anywhere from one-thousand to
13-hundred a year--- the courthouse had

to be brought into the 21st century.

The multi-phase upgrade started
with improvements to the circuit court
clerk's office - later, partitions and
bullet proof glass will be added a long
with a security door which leads to the
courtroom.

teams that will take part in the
64-team NCAA Division I baseball
tournament today and both VCU and UVA
made it into the field. In fact, UVA
will once again host a four team double
elimination regional in
Charlottesville. VCU won the Colonial
title and will play in Myrtle Beach.

season and the Cavs are seeded No. 1 in
the Charlottesville regional. regional.
They open play Friday afternoon
against fourth seeded Lafayette. This
regional also has Rutgers and Oregon
State, the defending NCAA champion.

This is Virginia 6th NCAA tourney
appearance all-time. Tickets for the
four day tournament at Davenport Field
are available in tourney booklets and
for individual sessions.

lacrosse championship for men was
settled today in Baltimore.

Yesterday, UVA almost got the
women's title for the ACC, today Duke
was trying to get the men's crown for
the conference as it faced off against
Johns Hopkins.

ESPN Attackman Matt Danowski the high :00 flying Duke scorer couldn't get it
going in the firts half as the Blue
Devils found themselves in a major hole
by the time they hit the halftime break
against Hopkins.

The guys in the powder blue
jerseys were on top and in control with
a 10-to-4 lead thanks to Jake Byrne who
had four goals by halftime.

But in the second half, Duke
showed its championship poise and
ripped off five straight goals in the
third period to make it a 10-to-9 game.
The Duke defense shutdown Hopkins
completely in the third and siezed the
momentum.

Then with 437 left in the game,
the Blue Devils came all the way back
and tied the contest at 11-all.

But Hopkins would get the game
winner and the 12-to-11 victory. *CG final Duke

without a little major league baseball.

This afternoon in Cincinnati, the
Reds played host to the PIrates.

FSN This game featured the first
pitch being thrown out by an Iraq war
veteran who lost both of his legs in
combat.There also was a lengthy moment
of silence to remember all veterans on
this Memorial Day.

That stoppage in play was planned
this one was not.

The game was delayed for 13
minutes in the top of the third after
center fielder Ryan Freel was injured
in a collision with right fielder

Norris Hopper. Freel hit the ground and
didn't move for several minutes. He
was placed in a stretcher and
transported from the field by ambulance
to Good Samaritan Hospital for tests on
his *CG final Pittsburgh head and neck. Fortunately, they came 0 back normal. Once things calmed down Cincinnati the Reds won the game 4-to-nothing.

season the Knights have been playing
and practicing at Buchanan Elementary
School

and their new home for a season hasn't
slowed down the Knights, they carry a
14 and 6 Record into their Regional
Quarterfinal game on Tuesday against
Galax. The Game will be played the
Knights Home away from Home.
