years now. Two years ago, the county
expanded it to include all high school
students.

Beach Week has been a rite of
passage for decades in this region---

authorities who continue searching for
the suspect in a shooting that left one
man seriously injured.
It happened last night in the
11-hundred block of 9th Street where
Vantrese (van-TRESE) Boyd was shot in
the chest.

police have identified the alleged
gunman ... he's 26-year-old James
Melvin Ferguson of Lynchburg.

Garrison has died.
Garrison lost his battle with
Leukemia Sunday.
The 65-year old Roanoke lawyer
had been active in Democratic politics-
-and in later years a leading advocate
for gay rights.

counsel to the House Judiciary
Committee during Watergate.
When he ran for Roanoke
Commonwealth's attorney in 1969,
Garrison almost swept the city, winning

Apart from such controversial issues,
Garrison was stripped of his law

stores are going to have to jump over
an extra hurdle to build in the town.

In a meeting that lasted 5 hours
last night, the Blacksburg Town Council
passed the controversial ordinance
known as "14-50".
It limits the size of retail
buildings to 80-thousand square feet.
Anything larger will have to go
through an extra review process with
the town.
Blacksburg is already facing a
lawsuit over the ordinance from a
developer planning to build a big box
store on South Main Street.
A judge will hear that case next
week.

Monday night the planning
commission will hear from an Amish
farmer who wants to rebuild his dog
kennel.
In March, an accidental fire
killed 167 puppies at Philip
Schmucker's home in Byrnes Chapel.
It turns out, the kennel never
had a special permit needed to operate
with in the county.
Schmucker is now seeking that
special permission.
The county is expecting so many
folks at the 7:00 meeting, it's moved
it to the school board offices in
Bastian.

of the progam to earn first team
all-American honors.
This season she had a 38 and 7
record with an earned run average of
point five six - best in the nation and
she struckout 617 batters.
But she also gets it done in the
classroom.
She is a finance major with a 3
point eight four grade point average.

were honored today for their drawings
