BUT IT'S THE RECENT TRIP HE TOOK TO

THE GOOD NEWS: X-D-R DOES NOT SEEM TO

BEEN 49 REPORTED CASES IN THE U-S SINCE
19-93.

Dr. Sean Kenniff/CBS NEWS/Miami, FL:

ACCORDING TO PUBLISHED REPORTS THE MAN
IS NOT SHOWING ANY SIGN OF

SICKNESS.

LIKE ALL TUBERCULOSIS THIS RARE FORM
CAN LAY DORMANT FOR YEARS.

HOWEVER, ONCE SYMPTOMS START THEY'RE
VERY DIFFICULT TO STOP... AND MANY

PATIENTS END UP DYING.

Dr. Betty Finnk/Memorial Healthcare

"hospitals are constantly vigilant to

TREATED WITH ANTIBIOTICS... MEDICINE

HAS LITTLE OR NO EFFECT ON X-D-R. THAT
HAS HEALTH OFFICIALS ACROSS THE GLOBE
KEEPING A CLOSE EYE OUT.

Dr. Betty Finnk/Memorial Healthcare

"It's definitely a potential for the
next biggest problem we can have in the

Some of the questions these
workers want answered as they took to
the picket line this morning at
Verizon's Roanoke maintenance center.

The Communications Workers of
America organized the rally.

They're worried that plans to
de-regulate would mean a higher cost
for service and a loss of union jobs.

Verizon Virginia's president
Robert Woltz -- was there to talk about
Verizon's plans to deregulate.

Verizon is the only company of

GRAPHIC=None No news could be good news when it

comes to two wayward whales in northern
California.

ENG#=2 VO-NAT

VO-NAT Rescuers have not been able to find

the mother and calf today. The two may
have slipped back into the Pacific
Ocean, following their two-week trip
about

90 miles inland.

The whales were last seen yesterday,
and one spectator said she would have
liked to had one last chance to say
goodbye.
