for a suspect in a shooting last night
on 9th street.
Authorities say Vantrese Boyd was
shot in the chest, and is listed in
serious condition at Lynchburg General
Hospital.

James Melvin Ferguson of Lynchburg as
the suspect.
He faces several charges,

Residents of Baghdad�s impoverished
Sadr City say this damage was
inflicted by hundreds of U.S. and Iraqi
troops.. hunting for 5 British
men kidnapped Tuesday from the Finance
Ministry.
The early morning raid was one of
several that netted a number of
suspected militants but did not locate
the missing men.
Four security guards and the man they
were protecting were last seen in
a convoy of SUV�s headed for Sadr
City.grabbed by about 40 men wearing
police commando uniforms in a brazen
daytime operation. Iraqi officials
believe the Shiite Mahdi Army could be
responsible.

challenge for the American military..
already dealing with a spike in troop
casualties and insurgents who are
on the move.

troops in Iraq and they need

killing by British forces last week
of the militia�s commander in Basra.
A British crisis team has been set up
to contact the kidnappers�while
the Britain�s elite, SAS commandos are

on Hershberger Road this morning for a
visit from Verizon Virgina President
Robert Woltz.
Protestors say they're concerned
that deregulation would cause an
increase in prices and a loss of union
jobs. They're also concerned the
company will not offer its Fiber Optic
services in rural areas.
Verizon is the only
communications company in Virigina
that's still subject to regulation --
something the company says puts it at a
competitive disadvantage.
Verizon says the union is getting
an early bargaining start since its
labor contracts do not expire until
August of next year.

The weekly general audience in St.
Peter's Square is an occasion for
rejoicing. But for Gerry and Kate
McCann today's was an act of faith to
try and end every parent's worst
nightmare.

They gave Pope Benedict XVI a
photograph of their daughter Madeline,
a
happy child captured in a cell phone
video as she left on holiday for
Portugal where she was abducted while
her parents were having supper.
The audience was the latest effort by
the McCann's to raise awareness of
the case.

"We understand many differnt possible
scenarios here but we must
believe, do believe .. and get Madeline
back and with us."
Since her abduction on May 3rd Madeline
had her fourth birthday. Her
picture has been circulated throughout
Europe, a campaign that has
helped her parents cope.

"I think certainly the first 72 hours
really were the worst time for
both of us. It's still hard at this
point to get away from all the dark
places."
As important as faith is, the couple
said, they drew even more strength
from the outpouring of public support.

faith has given us strength but
it has restored my faith in humanity as
much as anything
Kate McCann/Mother: So much goodness up
there but it's really evident
and it's really helped us.
And that, along with prayers, and a few
brief seconds of cell phone

players ever to put on a uniform.

(END SOT) made it to the Regionals this season
for the first time ever. A big part of
their success was the play of the
Rotanz sisters. Ryan and Katie.
Katie a Senior is headed to
Virginia Tech next season to play for
the Hokies well her younger sister Ryan
is being recruited by a number of top
schools to come play Lacrosse for them
after she completes High School.

(STANDUP: That the Rotanz sisters are
talented at Lacrosse shouldn't be a
real suprise. There Father Bob played
at Roanoke College where he helped lead
the maroons to the National Title in
1978. He was inducted into the Roanoke
College Hall of Fame in 1988 but it
took Dad a little while to catch on to
the girls game.
