Power customers are still without
electricity after some severe
thunderstorms rolled through the area

last night. The major outages are
centered in Wythe, Pulaski and Franklin
Counties.

and Fork Mountain areas south of Rocky
Mount around 9 p.m.

trees.

With the ice on the ground mixing
with the falling rain, it caused the
temperature to drop suddenly, resulting
in a dense fog over the entire area.

Rescue crews were left with the
challenge of responding to calls with
only a few feet of visibility in front
of them.

One house was destroyed.

half hour ago.

The truck carrying lumber ran off the
road and lost its cargo, causing the

German man attempted to jump into Pope
Benedict's popemobile during today's
general audience.

A Vatican spokesman says the man
didn't intend to harm the pontiff, and
showed signs of "mental imbalance. "

He says the 27- year- old man was
questioned and taken to a psychiatric
hospital for treatment.

The pope apparently didn't notice.

The French Open devoured the last
remaining American in either men's or
women's singles, as Serena Williams was
knocked out of the event.
