that's been on the Drillfield since
April 17th.

It will be a little more
polished, but still only temporary.

reflection for mourners.

Students placed these stones in a semi
circle a day after the shooting and
flowers have been arriving there ever
since.

The university says THESE stones will
be given to the families. Tech is going
to place new, engraved stones in their
place. Each will bear the name of a
victim.

new temporary memorial. The stones will
be embedded in an arc of crushed gravel
and surrounded by a walking path.
Construction will begin next week.

As for a permanent memorial.. that is
at least three years away. And the

Memorial Pylons on the other end of the

Corporal David Mays was driving
the group as part of his off duty job
with a Roanoke bus company.

A parent and student spotted the
gun when the group stopped at a rest
area in Charlottesville.

Sheriff Brown says Mays is a

rivers. State environmental experts
want to know why.

Last month, D-E-Q said fish kills
had been reported in the upper James

River in Botetourt County as well as
the Cowpasture, Maury and Shenandoah
Rivers.

New information released today
shows dead fish have been appearing in
the James River near Lynchburg as well.

The fish affected are mostly
small-mouth bass and redbreast sunfish,
though other species have been found
dead or suffering from sores.

Scientists have been taking
samples of water and river sediment to
see if they contain any known fish
viruses.

Prosecutors couldn't prove who
pulled the trigger, but two men: Carson

for the murder.

decided to step down.

Brad Morton - who has coached at
Covington for 36 years as either an
assistant or head coach will remain at
the school as a guidance counselor.

Friday Football Extra Morton took over as the Cougars :00 head football coach in the summer of
1997 after one of his mentors John
Woddzell retired.

Morton spent 10 years as the head
football coach leading the Cougars to

Covington team that won the Group A
state championship.

champs are crowned takes place in the
New River Valley tomorrow.

The Blacksburg girls tennis team
was supposed to play Tabb high school
tomorrow in the semi-finals, but the
girls from the Peninsula had a minor
traffic accident betwenn Interstates 64
and 95 on the way here today, and as a
result the team has decided to forfeit
its state matches.

Also, the seniors at Cave Spring
playing boys' soccer will make it to
graduation, afterall.

The Knights soccer match will now
take place at 2pm tomorrow thanks to a
switch with Blacksburg - which will now
play at 4.

Hidden Valley's T.C. Bane.

This Season The Titans' senior is a starting
centerfielder for Hidden Valley's
baseball team that will play Waynesboro

in the Final Four tomorrow. Bane has
been able to pull off the rarest of
triple plays his senior year.

He also was a wide receiver on
the Titans' football team that made it
all the way to the State semi-finals
before losing to Richlands.

And he starred on the Hidden
Valley basketball team that also made
it to the Group Two A Final Four.

In all, Bane has started on three
Final Four teams in the same school
year - and he was Hidden Valley's B'nai
B'rith representative.
