Designed as a fishing boat and

served as a pilot schooner, and a

But now the Boston-based World

Back on the Roseway, captain and

As Atlantis astronauts finished up
their first spacewalk.. they got the
news they ll be up there a little
longer than expected.

00:06:28 I have the official word for
you, that we are going to be giving you
guys two extra bonus days in space.////

00:06:51 Houston that is just really
great news/// we appreciate the extra
days in space, we ll make good use of
them

The Atlantis crew will use part of that
extra time to do some repair work on
the shuttle. A thermal blanket peeled
back during Friday s launch.. and
engineers have decided to fix it.

(John Shannon, Deputy Shuttle Program
Manager)

SHANNON 01:14:38 we think that the
astronauts will be able to go out there
and just push this right back down//
and they re working right now on ways
to attach it to the blanket that s
lying beside it

NASA plans three more shuttle flights
this year.. and can t afford any
delays.. fixing the blanket in-flight
means they won t have a bigger repair
job later.

(Bill Harwood, CBS News Space
Consultant)

HARWOOD 23:41:30 I don't think anybody

looks at this as a life or death
situation, its one of those things that
if they re-enter as it is it would
cause some damage that would probably
need to be repaired and that takes time
and money

(NAT-)

At the International Space Station..
the Atlantis crew is pressing ahead
with the mission to connect a
35,000-pound segment that will increase
the station s power capability. Despite
a late start to Monday s spacewalk..
the astronauts got everything ready for
new solar arrays to deploy today.

CLOSE: Mission mangers should have a
better idea today whether astronauts
will try to fix the thermal blanket
during the third spacewalk or a newly
added fourth spacewalk. Claire Leka,
