(END SOT) Engineers are said to be making

progress as they scramble to get three

critical computer systems on the
International Space Station back on

line.

Sot: sot: Bill Harwood, CBS News Space

Consultant (09:41:50)

This is a very sophisticated computer
system that they still don't know

why it failed in the first place, but
its encouraging news they've

gotten one system back up and running."

The computers in question control the
station's oxygen supply and its

position in space. Overnight, Shuttle
which is docked at the space

station.. took over the job of keeping
it in the proper orbit.

Experts say none of the astronauts or
station crew were ever in danger,

but the future of the station was in
question.

(sot: Harwood again)

You can't stay on the station if you
can't control its orientation; you

got to be able to maneuver it if
there's piece of space junk in front of

you or things like that."

(BRIDGE)

Russian engineers believe the Atlantis
crew may have triggered the

problem when they installed new solar

panels.

Shutting down the power on the U-S side
of the station it still didn't

not help.

This comes just as astronauts are
preparing for a space walk to repair

a torn thermal blanket used to protect
the shuttle during re-entry.

NASA doesn't believe the tear presents
any danger to the crew but the

space agency doesn't want to risk
damaging Atlantis.

For now the shuttle remains anchored
to the International Space Station

while the experts try to fix its
computers. Without the computers, the

station has a 56 day supply of
oxygenbut everyone is confident all
the

systems will be up and running way
before then.

And one by one, cities and towns along
the gaza strip are falling to the

More than 80 people have been killed
since fighting spiked last weekend,

plunging the Palestinian territory

Rock bottom may be coming as the war

ordered his elite presidential

guard to strike back.

But it may be too late -- although
Fatah forces outnumber Hamas, they've

already taken a beating by the
better-armed, better-disciplined Hamas

fighters.

Some Palestinians are pleading for
outside help...repeating calls for an

international peacekeeping force.

Tiger Woods is the favorite to
win.

But Tiger has struggled a bit-- at
least in his terms-- in the last few
tournaments he's played in, meaning he
didn't win.

Like everyone else in the U.S. Open,
Woods will have to deal with what is
expected to be brutal conditions at
Oakmont this week.

Lefty first injured his wrist
hitting practice shots out of Oakmont's
tough rough, while doing a site visit
to the course in late May.

There's no tissue damage to the

wrist, which is expected to heal within
a few days, assuming he doesn't
experience further trauma.

William`s basketball roots run
deep in the area.

She helped Glenvar win a state title
in hoops.

And then she went onto to play at both
Virginia Tech and Roanoke College,
where she was named the ODAC player of
the year in 2003.

Last season she was an assistant
coach at Ferrum College where she
helped lead the Panthers to a school
best 21 and 7 record.

She inherits a program that won
just 5 games last season.
