GRAPHIC=Crime Crime in Virginia....just how bad

is it and more specifically how much of
it happens in our area????

We now have those answers for
2006...released in the State Police's
annual crime report.

ENG#=1 SOT FULL

SOT FULL

INQ=Here's the breakdown

RUNS=1:19 (END SOT)

OQ=knew their attackers. < (END SOT) region....

In Roanoke, there were 8422 crimes
committed over the year...the most
common drunkeness

the number decreases moving into
Lynchburg, where the number is 5987
crimes...drugs the most common crime
there Into Danville, 4344, again
drunkeness ranks the highest and in
Martinsville, 1653 incidents, the
highest number of crimes, simple
assault

...The amount of crimes for all four
areas mentioned was higher in 2006 than
the previous year.

Now let's take a look at the number of
crimes committed on college
campuses...Across the board the most
common crime was theft.

UVA had the most criminal activity,
with 628 incidents

Virginia Tech had 517

moving onto Radford's campus, where
there were 289 incidents

and then there's VMI....at 31...

Now the report does get very
specific into who committs crimes, what
type of day they happen....

We're going to give you a few
examples....

In Virginia, the highest number of
murders happened in December........the
most common age group for drug use is
25-29........and of more than five
thousand forcible sex acts, only 451
were proven to be strangers, which
means the vast majority of victims knew
their attackers.>>

Students at William Fleming took
a moment to remember Henry Lee as they
celebrated their own accomplishments.

Lee was the salutatorian
sa-LOOT-uh-TOR-ee-ann of his class last
year. He was killed on April 16th at
Virginia Tech.

This year's valedictorian,
Christopher Ra, played a piano piece by
Chopin during his speech in recognition

Classes may be over but Martha Cobble
is still busy here at Cave Spring High
School.

She's packing up her things and
getting plenty of well wishes.

SOT FULL

MARTHA COBBLE: WELL IT'S JUST BEEN
AMAZING. I'VE BEEN NEARLY SPEECHLES.

(END SOT)

Speechles is not a word most people
would use to describe Martha Cobble.

She's zany (shot of her in the
costume) and definetely rosy, partly
because she often wears the school
colors of red, white, and black.

SOT FULL

MARTHA COBBLE: QUITE FRANKLY ON

OCCASIONS THAT I DIDN'T WEAR THOSE
COLORS I HEARD, WHERE IS YOUR RED,
WHITE, AND BLACK.

(END SOT)

For good reason, since the principal
is often the school's biggest
cheerleader.

And she's had plenty to cheer about,
espeically when it comes to athletics.

The Barber Twins and J.J. Redick have
all walked these halls.

SOT FULL

MARTHA COBBLE: ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS
OF J.J. REDDICK WAS WATCHING HIM PLAY
BUT ONE OF THE DIFFICULT TIMES WAS WHEN
WE HAD OUR BASKETBALL GAMES HERE AND WE
HAD SO MANY PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO COME
WE HAD TO TURN PEOPLE AWAY.

(END SOT)

Cobble is quick to point out she's
just as proud of the students who went
on to become doctors, lawyers,
engineers and teachers.

She doesn't take credit for their
success, saying she only played a small
part.

But she's been such a fixture here
it's hard imagine Cave Spring High
School without her.

SOT FULL

MARTHA COBBLE: I CERTAINLY WILL MISS
IT AND THE FIRST DAY THAT SCHOOL ROLLS
AROUND I WILL HAVE TO TELL MYSELF I
DON'T HAVE TO GET UP AND GO.

(END SOT)

So what does she plan to do during
retirement? Relax and travel of course
and maybe twirl the baton?

SOT FULL

MARTHA COBBLE: WELL JUSTIN HOW DID YOU
FIND THAT OUT?

JUSTIN McLEOD: IS IT TRUE?

MARTHA COBBLE: I CAN TWIRL A MEAN

Cobble also plans to publish a
cookbook full of recipes from the
community.

This Plymouth Belvedere was
buried in 19-57 as part of a time
capsule.

Hundreds gathered to watch this
crane bring the car up.

It's part of the city's
celebration of Oklahoma's 100th
anniversary of statehood.

Now this time capsule has a twist
to it, before the car was lowered into
the hole, people entered a contest to
guess what Tulsa's population would be
in 20-07.

The winner will be the person or
his or her heirs who guess closest to
the number.
