this morning... after an S-U-V
"crashed" into a CROWD on a sidewalk...
in downtown Blacksburg.

Police were called to the 200
block of South Main Street in front
of... "Big Al's Grill and Sports
Bar"... at about two o'clock.

Police arrested and charged
20-year-old...Mary Elizabeth Bowen...
of Blacksburg for driving under the
influence.

A breath test determined her
blood alcohol level to be at
"point-two-zero".

Six people were transferred to
Montgomery Regional Hospital and two
were taken to Carilion...New River
Valley Medical Center... in Radford.

None of the injuries appear to be
life threatening.

Virginia...just how BAD is it...and how
much happens in "our" community.

We now have "those" answers for
2006..from the State Police annual
crime report.

In Roanoke, there were 8422
arrests...the most common for
drunkeness

the number decreases moving into
Lynchburg, where the number is
5987...drugs the most common arrest
there.... Into Danville, 4344, again
drunkeness ranks the highest and in
Martinsville, 1653 arrests, most for
simple assault

...The amount of arrests for all four
areas mentioned was higher in 2006 than
the previous year.

Now let's take a look at the number of
arrests on college campuses...Across
the board the most common crime was
theft.

UVA had the most arrests, 628

Virginia Tech at 517

moving onto Radford's campus, where
there were 289 arrests

and then there's VMI....at 31...

Now the report does get very
specific into who committs crimes even
what type of day they happen....

We're going to give you a few
examples....

In Virginia, the highest number of
murders happened in December........the
most common age group for drug use is
25-29........and of more than five
thousand forcible sex acts, only 451
were proven to be strangers, which
means the vast majority of victims knew
their attackers.>>

might remember back in November,
41-year-old... Kevin Henderson...died
after being taken to the hospital.
We've learned the Roanoke Police
Department is CHARGING a 17-year-old
"Roanoke" male with murder. He is the
SECOND to be charged in this homicide,
the other suspect is 15.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's
Department tested a tsunami warning
system Friday.

It began by handing out earplugs
to people in the area, as things were
expected to get pretty loud when the
system was fired off.

The alarms are a combination of
sirens and verbal warnings and will
give residents a heads up to seek
higher ground in advance of a disaster.

Some of these devices are capable
of carrying a distinguishable voice
message about a mile and a half.

The tsunami alarms are not cheap.
Each costs about twenty five thousand
dollars.

Forty-two people were trapped in
a factory in central England after
flooding rains.

Some workers were seen standing
outside buildings with buckets.

Cars parked near by were floating

after heavy rains.

One woman was seen driving
straight into the floods and became
stranded.

She was later rescued.

Valley Medical Center... in Radford.

None of the injuries appear to be
life threatening.
