A LARGE NUMBER OF E-MAILS FROM WHITE

ACCOUNTS WITH THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL

COMMITTEE ARE MISSING.

A REPORT FROM THE HOUSE OVERSIGHT AND

GOVERNMENT REFORM COMMITTEE SAYS THE

MESSAGES WERE DELETED.

THE COMMITTEE SAYS THE E-MAIL ACCOUNTS

WERE USED FOR OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT

BUSINESS -- BUT THE RNC ONLY KEPT

RECORDS FOR 37 OF THE 88 STAFFERS WITH

ACCOUNTS.

THERE WERE 675--THOUSAND SAVED MESSAGES

-- MORE THAN 140-THOUSAND OF THEM FROM

TOP PRESIDENTIAL AIDE KARL ROVE.

That's a lot of e-mails.

THE WHITE HOUSE SAYS THE ACCOUNTS WERE

USED TO KEEP POLITICAL WORK SEPARATE

FROM OFFICIAL BUSINESS. BUT

INVESTIGATORS CLAIM THEY WERE USED IN A

WAY THAT "CIRCUMVENTED" THE WATER-GATE

ERA PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS ACT.

---GRAPHIC---

"During President Bush's first term,

momentous decisions were made, such as

the decision to go to war in Iraq. Yet

many e-mail communications during this

period involve the President's most

senior advisors. These violations could

be the most serious breach of the

Presidential Records act in the 30-year

history of the law."

---TRACK---

THE HOUSE COMMITTEE, LED BY DEMOCRAT

HENRY WAXMAN, STARTED CHECKING E-MAILS

AFTER MESSAGES FROM THE ACCOUNTS

SURFACED IN THE CASE OF IMPRISONED

LOBBYIST JACK ABRAMOFF AND THE FIRINGS

OF 8 U-S ATTORNEYS LAST YEAR.

THE WHITE HOUSE SAYS IT WILL COOPERATE

WITH THE INVESTIGATION.
