repeat performance.. rejecting an

embryonic stem cell bill.. just as he
did last July. BUSH 14:10:31 it crosses
a moral boundary that our decent
society needs to respect so I vetoed it
That was the President's first veto..
and he's accused Democrats of recycling
the same measure in new legislation
meant to ease restraints on federally
funded embryonic stem cell research.

pray that the president will think
differently this time about whether to
sign the bill. Democratic and
Republican supporters of the bill argue
the research holds promise for fighting
disease.. and saving lives. But
harvesting stem cells destroys
embryos.. and opponents view THAT as

will be, will we sanction the
destruction of nascent human life with
federal taxpayer dollars? Congress does
not have the votes to override the

groups say without federal funding the

SOLOMON 1:04:07 We are doing everything
we can so that we move the research
forward, but it doesn't compare to what
we could do if the federal government
was allowed to play its proper and
critical role. When he takes out his
veto pen today.. President Bush will
issue an executive order promoting
research on other stem cell lines.
CLOSE: This issue is expected to carry
some weight in the 2008 presidential
campaign.. public opinion polls show
strong support for embryonic stem cell

interchange to get used to.

The new Toms Creek Bridge opened
for the first time yesterday.

It's part of a new bypass over
Route 460.

You can reach the bridge from the
east bound lanes, but it will be a few
more weeks before west-bound traffic on
Route 460 will be able to use the
interchange.

The project is about half a
million dollars under budget and two
weeks ahead of schedule.

Under a new partnership with
V-DOT, town employees handled the
entire construction project.

Ukrop's will open a week from today.

Brush Creek Buffalo Store is

closing up shop at the end of the
month.

The owners, Jim and Jan Politis,
Poe-lit-is have been running the store
for 12 years, and they are ready to
retire from it.

They'll continue working on their
bison farm, selling buffalo meat and
turkey jerky wholesale to local stores
and restaurants.

Politis hopes someone will come
forward and buy the restaurant.

If there are no takers, Brush
Creek will serve its last plate of
buffalo on June 30th.

the Virginia Tech Review Panel now has
a tape recording and transcripts of
Seung-Hui Cho's mental health hearing.

In 2005, the special justice in
Montgomery County ruled that Cho was a
danger to himself and ordered him to
get outpatient treatment. We don't know
whether Cho ever received treatment.

Privacy laws have stymied the
panel's efforts to obtain the records

Governor Kaine signed an
executive order allowing the panel to
use subpoena power to obtain records.

Virginia Tech already has
given Cho's school counseling records
to the panel after getting permission
from his family.

sentence, after striking a plea
agreement the day before he was
scheduled for trial.

Instead, 30-year-old Aaron Paul
Gray pled no contest to first degree
murder and a firearms charge yesterday
- in exchange for a lighter sentence.

Gray shot Karen Elkins in the
head, then dumped her body in the
Roanoke River. A jogger discovered the
body last October.

As the trial date drew closer,
prosecutors said, one of their main
witnesses backed out. That's why they
agreed to plea bargain.

yesterday rounding up drug dealers.

The Pulaski/Radford Regional Drug
task force arrested 37 people on 118
indictments yesterday morning.

The arrests mark the end of an
eight-month investigation on mid-level

The last round-up handled by the
task force was in September.

Community Hospital.

According to a lawsuit filed
Friday, the Roanoke Redevelopment and
Housing Authority included the property

Redevelopment Area.

Later that year, the Housing
Authority offered 725-thousand dollars
for the property but withdrew the offer
four months later.

The Stegall's lawyers say
the housing authority's lack of
follow-through has left them unable to
sell or rent the property.

Police say that a vehicle ran off
of Bent Mountain Road and hit a
telephone pole at around 1:30 this
morning.

The pole was severed and the

The car was unoccupied when

a tape recording and transcripts of
Seung-Hui Cho's mental health hearing.

In 2005, the special justice in
Montgomery County ruled that Cho was a
danger to himself and ordered him to
get outpatient treatment. We don't know
whether Cho ever received treatment.

Privacy laws have stymied the
panel's efforts to obtain the records

Governor Kaine signed an
executive order allowing the panel to
use subpoena power to obtain records.

Virginia Tech already has
given Cho's school counseling records
to the panel after getting permission

from his family.
