In just wasn't to be.
Low clouds and storms close to the
landing site, forced NASA to scrub
both attempts to land the space shuttle
Atlantis Thursday at the
Kennedy Space Center.
(NATSOUND)
NASA flight rules say the Shuttle can't
land if there are storms within
34 miles and the cloud cover is lower
than eight thousand feet.
For these astronauts--this delay is
minor. Before they took off 13
days ago---they were on hold for three
months after hail damaged the
external fuel tank.
(JUNE 8)
But when Atlantis finally took to the
sky it was nearly flawless.
One snag though...was a torn thermal
blanket on the exterior. The
mission was extended two days so it
could be repaired.
And vital Russian computers that
control steering and oxygen on the the
international space station went down.
They were fixed..but they still
aren't sure what caused them to crash.
(STANDUP: DREW LEVINSON/KENNEDY SPACE

AS A WHOLE THIS WAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL
MISSION. NASA GOT ACCOMPLISHED
EVERYTHING IT WANTED ESPECIALLY WHEN IT
CAME TO EXPANDING THE
INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION.
The astronauts installed and activated
those power-generating solar
arrays and installed a new truss
segment.
As for Astronaut Sunita
Williams--she'll get another day to add
to her
already record setting pace for longest
single spaceflight for a woman.
NASA hopes to have her and the rest of
the crew back on the ground
Fridayweather permitting.
They'll have at least four shots here
