GRAPHIC=Virginia Tech Virginia Tech has announced that

it will be implementing a new emergency
alert system on campus known as "VT
Alerts".

New technology will enable the
university to send messages to
subscribers using methods not
maintained by the university.

These methods include text
messages and phone calls to personal
cell phones.

Instant messages and e-mail can
also be sent to systems such as America
Online that reside outside of the
university's network

Students, Faculty, and staff will
be able to sign up for the "VT Alerts"
options beginning on July 2nd.

The system is expected to be
fully operational by August 20th, the
first day of fall classes.
