heating up in Bedford.

Developers want to build a new

OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7. << With a perfect view of the Peaks
(END SOT) and a hospital right next door, many

say this land is one of Bedford's
hottest properties.

That's why residents in this
North Hills neighborhood weren't
surprised when a developer announced
plans to build a new housing project
here.

What did catch people off guard
was the type of housing the project
might create.

Peggy Vereen 1:08:08 "I think the
whole tone of the community will be
changed by this" 1:08:14

Peggy Vereen is part of a group
that's against re-zoning for the

Oakwood Villas project - a proposed
development of more than a hundred
townhomes on a span of 27 acres.

Residents say it won't fit in
with a neighborhood that's dominated by
single family homes.

1:14:23 "We're flooding the
community with 108 additional
properties, so how can that help real
estate in Bedford, except for the tax
base?" 1:14:31

Developers were unavailable for
comment, but in a statement to Bedford
City Council, they say their project
will offer a much needed housing
alternative.

They say the townhomes will be
well-maintained, with a property owners
association to keep residents in check.

Neighbors here say they're not
opposed to the project itself, they'd
just like to see it in another part of
town.

1:05:38 "It's not an elitist
area. This is not about personalities.
It's about maintaining our zoning as

it is now." 1:05:45

1:06:37 "We just want our
neighborhood preserved." 1:06:40

Residents will have a chance to
learn more about Oakwood Villas and
submit comments on the project at a
public hearing on July 10th.

The meeting is scheduled for 7:30
pm at the Bedford City Municipal
Building.
