GRAPHIC=Apartment Fire A massive apartment fire in
Southwest Roanoke has left dozens of
people homeless.

The fire broke out just before eight
o'clock last night at the Maple Shades
Apartments on 13th Street.
When firefighters arrived they found
flames shooting out of the back of the
building.
They quickly got the fire under
control but then had water pressure
problems.
Therefore, the fire then spread to
the attic and to the apartment building
next door.
As a result, it took firefighters
more than a hour to contain the fire.

Firefighters say everyone got out
safely and no one was injured.
It is unclear how the fire started
but we do know both apartment buildings
are a complete loss.
The American Red Cross was called in
to provide shelter to the more than 32
residents who were displaced.

Virginia Tech campus, and there's
plenty of evidence to indicate it's
related to the campus shootings on
April 16.

Crews dug a ditch that is slowly
draining the duck pond at Tech.
No word from State Police on what
they might be looking for, but the
Washington Post reported last week that
police conducted an earlier search of
the duck pond, in hopes of finding
Seung-Hui Cho's computer hard drive.
The Post reports Cho removed the
hard drive from his computer before the
shootings, and someone saw him at the
duck pond the morning of April 16.

soldiers from the Lynchburg-based 1st
Battalion, 116th Infantry are headed
off to war.
About 300 members of the unit are
stationed in Kosovo until November.
Approximately 180 others -- based
in Bedford, Christiansburg, Pulaski and
Lexington -- are being attached to the
group, which is headed to Camp Shelby
in Mississippi for training before
going to the Middle East.
Some of those being moblized have
already served a year in Iraq -- coming
home last spring.

The Lynchburg school announced
yesterday it's cutting its staff by
15-percent.
That means about 35 full and part
time positions will be eliminated.
According to the school's
spokeswoman -none of the academic
programs will be affected by the
change.
She says the cuts are being made
in an effort to operate more
effectively and efficiently.
It was just last year the college
decided to go co-ed after operating as
a single-sex institution for
116-years.
