seen for miles.

UP. AND I GOT AROUND THE CORNER AND
BOTH BUILDINGS WERE ON FIRE." 4:01:22

Officials say the fire started on
the first floor of the north building
shortly before 8 o'clock.

It didn't take long for flames to
climb to the roof.

From there it spread across the
entire complex.

Crews worked to spread water from
the ground and the air, but with flames
this intense, it didn't take long for
the hydrants to run dry.

down initially, but we ran into some
water problems and we had to pull
hydrants about 4 or 5 blocks away.

Lightning eventually forced crews

off their ladder trucks.

But by then, the buildings were a
total loss.

As witnesses watched the flames
die down, friends began looking for
ways to help.

1:46:38 "A lot of people don't
have any shoes on and, me personally, I
gave up the shoes that I had on my feet
tonight." 1:46:45

Investigators aren't sure how the
fire started.

Luckily, no was injured - a small
comfort to some as they work to
re-build.

things that have been lost, but long as
the lives have been saved, everything

destroyed hundreds of homes and
buildings.

Homeowners are anxiously watching the
weather, and hoping firefighters can

Fire officials are blaming the rapid
spread on extremely dry conditions in
the area, and they're hoping high winds
won't return to fan the flames.

They estimate it could be Sunday
before the blaze is under control.

after a suicide bomber killed four
tribal chiefs in a strike on a Baghdad

soldiers from the Lynchburg-based 1st
Battalion, 116th Infantry are headed
off to war.

About 300 members of the unit are
stationed in Kosovo until November.

Approximately 180 others -- based
in Bedford, Christiansburg, Pulaski and
Lexington -- are being attached to the
group, which is headed to Camp Shelby
in Mississippi for training before
going to the Middle East.

Some of those being moblized have
already served a year in Iraq -- coming
home last spring.

draining a pond on campus, and there is
plenty of evidence to indicate it's
related to the campus shootings on
April 16.

Crews dug a ditch that is slowly
draining the duck pond at Tech.

No word from State Police are
what they might be looking for, but the
Washington Post reported last week that

police conducted an earlier search of
the duck pond, in hopes of finding
Seung-Hui Cho's computer hard drive.

The Post reports Cho removed the
hard drive from his computer before the
shootings, and someone saw him at the
duck pond the morning of April 16.

eventually able to "deactivate" the
device around 2:45 yesterday afternoon.

Investigators say while the
object looked like a pipe bomb -it was
probably some left over building
material left from years ago.

Several roads around the hospital
were closed yesterday and some
residents were temporarily evacuated as
a preventive measure.

last week.

after a massive apartment fire in
Southwest Roanoke.

The fire broke out just before eight
o'clock last night at the Maple Shades
Apartments on 13th Street.

When firefighters arrived they found
flames shooting out of the back of the
building.

They quickly got the fire under
control but then had water pressure
problems.

Therefore, the fire then spread to
the attic and to the apartment building
next door.

As a result, it took firefighters
more than a hour to contain the fire.

It is unclear how the fire started
but we do know both apartment buildings
are a complete loss.

The American Red Cross was called in

Officials say the fire started on
the first floor of the north building
shortly before 8 o'clock.

It didn't take long for flames to
climb to the roof.

From there it spread across the
entire complex.

Crews worked to spread water from
the ground and the air, but with flames
this intense, it didn't take long for
the hydrants to run dry.

down initially, but we ran into some
water problems and we had to pull
hydrants about 4 or 5 blocks away.

Lightning eventually forced crews
off their ladder trucks.

But by then, the buildings were a
total loss.

As witnesses watched the flames
die down, friends began looking for
ways to help.

have any shoes on and, me personally, I
gave up the shoes that I had on my feet

Investigators aren't sure how the
fire started.

Luckily, no was injured - a small
comfort to some as they work to
re-build.

soldiers from the Lynchburg-based 1st
Battalion, 116th Infantry are headed
off to war.

About 300 members of the unit are
stationed in Kosovo until November.

Approximately 180 others -- based

group, which is headed to Camp Shelby
in Mississippi for training before

draining a pond on campus, and there is

related to the campus shootings on
April 16.

No word from State Police are
what they might be looking for, but the
Washington Post reported last week that

hard drive from his computer before the
shootings, and someone saw him at the
duck pond the morning of April 16.

Police were notified and patients

object looked like a pipe bomb -it was
probably some left-over building
material from years ago.

Several roads around the hospital
were closed yesterday and some

15-percent.

over Christiansburg High School.

19 year-old Brandon Saunders was
found guilty of felony destruction of

You may remember they're part of
the transportation bill the General
Assembly passed to raise money for new
roads and rail.

What you probably did not realize
is how much breaking the law will cost.

Drivers convicted of reckless
driving will have to pay three
installments of 350- dollars within two
years of the conviction.

Fines for repeatedly driving
under the influence of drugs or alcohol
are one- thousand dollars.

More National Guard soldiers from
the Lynchburg-based 1st Battalion,
116th Infantry are headed off to war.
About 300 members of the unit are
stationed in Kosovo until November.

Approximately 180 others are being
attached to the group, which is headed
to Camp Shelby in Mississippi for
training before going to the Middle
East.

caused a massive apartment fire in
Southwest Roanoke. The fire broke out
just before eight o'clock last night at
the Maple Shades Apartments on 13th
Street. The American Red Cross was
