AND WITH THAT, THE SENATE DELIVERED A
POSSIBLE DEATH BLOW TO THE IMMIGRATION
BILL... AND A STINGING DEFEAT TO
PRESIDENT BUSH.
President Bush "Legal immigration is
one of the most important issues to
america and congress's failure to act
on it is a disappointment.
THURSDAY'S VOTE STOPS THE BILL FROM
MOVING TOWARD FINAL PASSAGE... AND
CONGRESS DOESN'T EXPECT TO BRING IT UP
AGAIN UNTIL AFTER NEXT YEAR'S
ELECTIONS.
Suraya Fadel/Los Angeles: One of the
largest immigrant communities is here
in Los Angeles... and the city has been
keeping a close watch on the debate.
When the vote failed... the news hit
hard.
MOS
THE MEASURE WOULD HAVE LEGALIZED up to
12 MILLION IMMIGRANTS.. AND BECAME AN
EXPLOSIVE ISSUE FOR THE SENATE.
Sen. Edward Kennedy/D-MA "Now is the
time to resume our commitment to family
values, to people who want to work
hard, men and women of faith... people
who care about this country."
Conservative republicans AGAINST THE
BILL SAID IT granted amnesty and DID
NOT REFLECT THE WISHES OF THE AMERICAN
PEOPLE.
Sen. Jim Demint/R-SC "This vote today
is really not about immigration, it's
about whether we're going to listen to
the american people and realize we have
to proceed more carefully in a more
sensitive matter."
THE MEASURE FAILED BY 14 VOTES.. AND BY
THE TIME DEBATE BEGINS AGAIN, A NEW
PRESIDENT WILL BE IN THE WHITE HOUSE.
