known as traffic calming.... and some
residents in Southeast Roanoke say
they're fed up with it.

Nearly three years ago, the city
of Roanoke narrowed the streets in
several locations on Bullitt and
Jamison Avenue.

The goal is to make drivers feel
uncomfortable speeding and force them
to slow down.

The problem is many are still
going so fast they hit the curb,
sending debris flying in the air.

hits Loretta Wirt's home.

She has 25 holes in the front and
side of her house.

This past weekend, a flying rock
hit her front door, shattering it all
over the porch.

for the new abuser fees for drivers
that start on Sunday.

Here's how they work....

If you drive recklessly or under
the influence of alcohol or drugs you
are charged a fee of anywhere from
$750- to three- thousand dollars.....
That money will then go into the
state's highway maintenance fund.

Some are calling the new law a
vicious catch- 22....

That's because drivers who can't
pay the fees loose their license-
preventing them from going to work to
make the money they need to pay the
state.

muddy waters of Virginia Tech's duck
pond again today.

So far, the search for clues to
the April 16th shootings hasn't turned
up anything.

shallow waters around the Gazebo.

drain the pond so it could look for any

Department of Health re-tested the
water at the beach when previous tests
showed there was too much e-coli
bacteria floating around

The results from THIS week show
the levels are back to normal.

had to think fast in order to rescue a
woman who jumped into the river on
Tuesday.

Police believe she was trying to
kill herself.

Authorities first got the call
from a concerned neighbor around Noon.

She told them the woman wanted to
take her life possibly because her
husband had just been deployed back
overseas.

Officer Matt Vass and his partner
went out to talk to the woman at
Wayside Park, but instead of talking,
she jumped.

of its location, and they're trying to
put away the rest of the fears of
weiner stand regulars.

Jim Sears says the business might
have to move 20 to 30 feet to the west,
