(END SOT) A lot of viewers are upset about the
new fees tied to dangerous driving.
"Since when did it become the police's
job to help generate revenues for
government projects?" asked Jason Mann.
"It seems this new law of fining
Virginia citizens for traffic offenses
is a dangerous move both for the
citizens and the politicians. Citizens
may start seeing the police not as
protectors of the people but as
henchmen for the politicians."
But not everyone feels abused by the
new fees.
"If you are not breaking the law then
you will not be charged these new civil
fees. It's that simple," says Roger
Mullins.
Justin McLeod's story about the damage
done by a traffic-calming project in
Southwest Roanoke brought this
suggestion from a Vinton driver:
"If area residents must drive this
obstacle course, most of us twice
daily, the city could at least re-pave
the road. Drivers managed to suffer
through delays during the original
project so I feel that the minimal
period of time to re-pave would be well
worth it."
The punishment of Aaron Pierce didn't
fit the crime according to a viewer
from Christiansburg. Pierce was
sentenced to 30 days in jail for
running over and killing a Virginia
Tech freshman in 2005.
"My question is how can a judge not see
anything "wrong" with sentencing
someone who took another's life to 30
days in jail, but others who commit
crimes such as uttering or assault &
battery, sentenced to 3 years."
And some viewers said we showed a
little too much of the toils residents
of Goshen had to go through during the
recent water emergency.

Anyone under 18 can no longer
chat on the phone while driving in
Virginia.
The new law also prohibits text
messaging or even using a hands-free
device while behind the wheel.
Only during an emergency can
younger drivers access their cell
phones.
Some teens say they've seen the
hazards driving and talking causes and
they think the law is necessary.

...And teens aren't the only ones
facing new rules.
Children have to be fastened into
a booster seat until their 8th
birthday.
Up until now, the law only
required safety seats for kids through
the age of five.
Also, rear-facing child seats
must be buckled into the back seat of
the vehicle unless there is no backseat
- in which case, the airbag in the
front seat has to be deactivated.

Researchers found even in middle age,
adopting a healthy lifestyle can lower
the risk for heart disease and
premature death.
Middle-aged adults who did not smoke,
began eating five or more fruits and
vegetables, exercised for at least 2
1/2 hours a week and kept their weight
down decreased their risk of heart

sun...but that doesn't mean you're
getting all the vitamin D you need.
New research shows in many people,
vitamin D levels can remain low despite
abundant exposure to sunlight.
Inadaquate sun exposure is usually
blamed for low vitamin D levels, but in
the study half the people who got
plenty of sun still didn't have enough
vitamin D.
