Saturday morning, it turned into a
crime scene and today, the

One person was shot and it was a
Roanoke police officer's bullet....

News 7's Natasha Ryan has more on
this-- Natasha, any new information?

*CG standup Natasha Ryan
nryan@wdbj7.com Well, Jean, police did release the

went down.

*CG locator Roanoke
Saturday Police cars and ambulance crews
flooded the Sheetz Parking Lot around
five am...but it all BEGAN with a phone
call from 50-year-old Rabem Menefee...
who called police claiming he had been
carjacked....

The car was spotted on Williamson
Road before pulling into
Sheetz....That's where 3 officers
approached the car, ordering the
driver, 30-year-old Chauncey Wade and
his two passengers, both teenage boys
to put their hands up and get
out....When officers saw Wade reach
under his seat, they tried opening the
car doors....but Wade put it in reverse
and hit all three officers, pinning one
of them, Officer C.T. Berrman between
two vehicles.

Berrman fired her gun, hitting
Wade in the leg...but he didn't stop
trying to flee until a police cruiser
rammed the car.

Nine bags of crack cocaine were
found in the car but no weapons. Wade

already has two outstanding warrants
and charges are pending against him in
this case.....
END VO NAT END VO

LIVE=NATASHA FULL LIVE FULL

Now going back to the beginning
of all of this...the man who reported
the carjacking later took back his
story, saying he traded the car for
drugs. He's been charged with filing a
false police report.

DOUBLE BOXES=JEAN/NATASHA (DOUBLE BOXES)

And Jean, Officer Berrman is on
administrative leave while the
department continues its
investigation...but that's routine in
any officer involved shooting.

OQ=CBS NEWS, New York < (END SOT) you get the "feels-like" factor. In

Washington D-C it feels like a sizzling
100-degrees.

Barbara Carter / Tourist:

"This is going to be one long day.
Hopefully there are enough shade trees
that we can cool down from block to
block."

The whole city's on code orange alert
.. meaning the stagnant air could be
dangerous for children, the elderly,
and anyone with respiratory problems.

There's a run on fans and window units
in Philadelphia ... where the excessive
heat warning came with a "feels-like"
high of 106.

Cooling centers offered the only break
from it ... for those on a fixed income
who can't afford to keep it cool at
home

Karen Brown / CBS News / New York:

"Here in New York City the Office of
Emergency Services is warning folks to
take it easy in this extreme heat...
but - for many - just trying to make
a living....like these pedi-cab
drivers....avoiding the heat just isn't
an

option."

"Bottom line, got to make money, got to
pay the bills."

Tough work.... and he's not the only
struggling in the heat. The demand for

air conditioning is putting a strain on
the New York City power grid. A team of
top utility engineers are on standby
for any outages ...

and the mayor is urging everyone to
conserve.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg:

"No one wants to have a blackout and if

you stress system, there will be
failures."

They've got it made ... even without
much shade at the new floating pool in
Brooklyn ... it's built on a barge.

Ella McOwen / Brooklyn:

"Well, my feet are burning right now so
it is pretty hot!"

The longer the heat wave lasts, the
more dangerous it can get .... and
according to the forecast for much of
the Northeast ... it could be several
days before there's any relief in
sight.

"The five second rule was if it falls

(STANDUP: Dr. Sean Kenniff/CBS
NEWS/Miami, FL)

So can you really eat food you drop on
the floor, if you pick it up before

five seconds. (vo nat of apple falling)
Turns out, you actually have a little

bit more time than that, a new study
found it's closer to thirty seconds.

(VO)

A NEW STUDY TESTED SLICES OF
APPLES....(nat) AND SKITTLES, SCATTERED

AND FOUND NEITHER COLLECTED ENOUGH
GERMS TO MAKE YOU SICK WITHIN FIVE

IN FACT IT WAS SAFE TO EAT THE APPLE

AND FOR SKITTLES, YOU HAVE AT LEAST A

THAT'S NOT A SURPRISE FOR BARBARA

(SOT- Barbara Russell, RN/Baptist

"It did validate what we already knew,
that wet is worse than dry, so if

something wet and it drops, its more
likely to pick something up than if

something dry to begin with."

AND IT SUPPORTS PREVIOUS STUDIES, THAT

EVEN GUMMI BEARS--ALL ARE FIVE SECOND

OF COURSE A LOT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU

This bear got stuck in a tree on a
GOLF course in Colorado.

Officials at the golf course shut down
the the 6th, 7th and 8th holes
yesterday morning to make sure the
players were safe.

The Division of Wildlife moved in and
shot the animal with a couple of

tranquilizer darts.

After a few minutes the bear lost
consciousness and fell out of the tree
and onto a tarp waiting for him below.

Wildlife officials then released the
bear back into the wild.
