rattled by a powerful midmorning quake.

Residents near the first epicenter,
About 200 miles northwest of tokyo,

endured a temblor of identical force
only three years ago, but say this one

was more frightening.

SOT "IT WAS SCARY," SAYS THIS RESIDENT.

A number of people died when buidlings

in the worst-hit city of Kashiwazaki,
on the Sea of Japan, thousands had to

"THE EARTHQUAKE WAS SO HUGE I COULDN'T

(natz)

Fire broke out at a massive nuclear
power plant. Officials say the blaze
was

quickly contained, without causing

radiation leaks, but broadcast reports

claim contaminated water leaked from
the plant into the Sea of Japan.

(natz touring

The disaster forced Prime Minister
Shinzo Abe to abort a campaign tour in

southern Japan, and rush to inspect the
damage in Kashiwazaki City, near the

epicenter of the magnitude 6.8 quake.

The temblor, which was felt as far away
as Tokyo, flattened traditional wooden

homes..

roads and bridges buckled and a train
derailed.

A tsunami warning was issued but later
lifted.

For residents, meanwhile, the worst
part is knowing that the disaster may
not

be over yet. Today's second quake may
just be the first of powerful

aftershocks that could continue through
this week.

Suicide car bombers brought chaos to
the streets of Kirkuk.

Twin explosions in the Northern Iraqi
city killed more than 80 people and

wounded twice as many.

Civilians and emergency workers dug
victims from the rubble.. rushing them

to the hospital.

The attackers targeted the headquarters
of the Kurdish political party and an

outdoor market then a third bomber took
aim at police with a blast several

hours later.

Iraqi officials say the U-S campaign
to curb violence in and around Baghdad

is forcing sunni insurgents to take
their attacks further north.

With the 28-thousand strong troop surge
fully in place .. today the U-S

military announced a new offensive in
the Iraqi capitol to stop weapons and

fighters from moving into the city.

BRIDGE: Here on Capitol Hill the
momentum continues to build for pulling
US

troops out of iraq as soon as
possible. Lawmakers are reopening
debate on

some of those proposals today.

Senate Democrats are trying again this
week to set a deadline for reducing U-S

forces.. and Republicans have some
ideas of their own.

Key G-O-P Senators Richard Lugar and
John Warner have proposed that
President

Bush start to examining different
options in Iraq NOW.. rather than wait
for

the troop surge progress report this
september from General David Petreaus.

The White House has flatly rejected the
Lugar-Warner measure.. saying the

surge needs time to work and that
commanders on the ground.. not
politicians

are going to make the call. Karen

It's by far the largest payout since

include one million dollars to each of

the 508 victims.

So far ... nationwide ... the
accusations have cost the Catholic
church over 2

billion dollars.

In Los Angeles ... none of the

settlement money will come out of
parish

budgets ... instead insurance and the
sale of church properties will help

cover the cost.

Cardinal Roger Mahoney has long been
accused of covering up the scandal..

18:09:50 (Cardinal Roger Mahony / Los

"The one thing I wish I could give the
victims, I cannot. And that is a

restoration to where they were
originally."

Many victims say this payout will not
restore what they've lost.

20:06:47 (Esther Miller, Abuse
Plaintiff)

"It just means I will be able to pay
for some of the treatments I should've

gotten long ago."

Despite the settlement, many victims
want to make sure the church - which

avoided a trial and potentially

embarrassing revelations... does not
turn a

blind eye to abuse in the future.
