Tam Airlines flight 3054 ended in a
firey crash.

After trying to land in a driving
rainstorm at the San Paulo airport--the

pilot apparently tried to take off
again.

The Airbus 320 cleared the airport
fence and a busy highway, but then
slammed

into a gas station and a cargo
terminal.

(Douglas Ferrari / Brazilian Assoc. of

(nats: Portuguese)

the situation was very bad .. this
man says.. and the firemen couldn't

enter the plane.

Temperatures inside were said to
reach one-thousand degrees ... leaving
no

chance for anyone to survive.

(nats: upset families)

As waiting relatives clamored for a
passenger list and more information ...

the safety of the runway ... which has
been called dangerously short .. is

once again being questioned . A day
earlier ... two planes slipped off the

runway in rainy weather. .. and in
1996 a plane went down after takeoff..

killing all 96 on board.

early this year, a federal court
banned large jets from using the

airport ... but an appeals court
overruled because of the economic
impact.

Pilots say the main runway is like
landing on an aircraft carrier ... and
is

especially risky since the airport is
surrounded by heavily populated

neighborhoods

The problem runway had also recently
been resurfaced ... but had not yet
been

grooved ... which would have provided
better braking traction in the rain.

The President of Brazil declared three
days of national mourning for the

nation's worst air disaster ... as TAM
airlines offered condolences to the

families.
