<
American cities are hotter than the
towns that surround them.
In the city, highs may reach the 90s,
but just a few miles away, the
temperatures may be 5 to 10 degrees
cooler.
You can blame the urban warmth on
THIS.. the paving of America.
Asphalt roads and black tar roofs
absorb heat, warming the surrounding
air like an open oven.
It's easiest to see by satellite. The
red spotches show the hottest spots in
the east, New York Philidelphia,
Balitmore and Washington.
Sure it's uncomfortable, but the
temperature difference may also have
the power to change local weather.
(Marshall Shepherd/research
Meteorologist) Those afternoon
thundershowers that occur during the
warm season that seem random, may not
be that random after all.
Scientists believe that during the
summer, communities downwind of big
cities may actually receive 10 to 25
percent extra rain, as hot urban air
condenses to form storm clouds which
then move over rural areas.
While most just live with the heat,
some are fighting back, suggesting
green is the way to go. The architects
of this apartment complex in Arizona
estimate that by greening up the
terrace and roof, temperatures went
down 8 to 10 degrees. Taking you Beyond

TNT Drew Weaver, the junior at
:00 Virginia Tech, could have cared less
what the weather was like. The British
Amateur champ got off to a great start
with birdies on his first two holes but
struggled on the way in. Drew narrowly
misses running this putt in for par on
the final hole. He would tap that in
for a bogey. Weaver finished the day
at plus 5 after a round of 76.
John Daly was in the hunt with a
share of the lead at 5-under thanks to
shots like this one as he holes out.
But the 1995 champ stumbled with a
double and a triple bogey to finish
2-over with a 74.
Tiger Woods is bidding for his
3rd straight British Open title. Tiger
had the flat stick working today. This
putt from about 80 feet finds the
bottom of the cup. Woods fired a
2-under 69, and is just four shots off
the lead held by Sergio Garcia at
6-under par.
