It happened yesterday evening outside
a medical office building on the east
side of the hospital.

A visitor contacted authorities after
seeing a suspicious object hanging from
a tree.

The State Police brought out a robot
to check it, and and soon after
detonated the device.

It's now been sent to a lab to find
out exactly what it was.

At no time was the hospital or any

That's the message that came out
of a rare joint- appearance yesterday
by Governor Tim Kaine and Republican
lawmakers.

The group pledged to find a way

There's also a push to remove

Lawmakers assured Virginians who
get an occasional speeding ticket won't
be affected.

They say the goal is to improve

The fees currently apply to
Virginia drivers only, and people are
upset over it.

Yesterday the governor and
Republican lawmakers defended the fees
and assured drivers who get the
occasional speeding ticket they won't
get socked with a three- thousand
dollar fine.

The fees apply only to
misdemeanors and felony convictions for
D-U-I and reckless driving OR
Virginians who've accumulated eight or

the Supreme Court's explanation of the

Nike executives say they will NOT
release a fifth signature shoe -- the
Air Zoom Vick -- this summer.

The four shoe products and three
shirts that currently bear Vick's name
will remain in stores.

This follows Tuesday's indictment
against Vick for his alleged role in a
dog fighting ring.

The indictment says Vick and
three others attended or took part in
at least 30 fights.... fights that took
place on property the football player
owns.

< American cities are hotter than the
towns that surround them.

In the city, highs may reach the 90s,

but just a few miles away, the
temperatures may be 5 to 10 degrees
cooler.

You can blame the urban warmth on
THIS.. the paving of America.

Asphalt roads and black tar roofs
absorb heat, warming the surrounding
air like an open oven.

It's easiest to see by satellite. The
red spotches show the hottest spots in
the east, New York Philidelphia,
Balitmore and Washington.

Sure it's uncomfortable, but the
temperature difference may also have
the power to change local weather.

(Marshall Shepherd/research
Meteorologist) Those afternoon
thundershowers that occur during the
warm season that seem random, may not
be that random after all.

Scientists believe that during the
summer, communities downwind of big
cities may actually receive 10 to 25
percent extra rain, as hot urban air
condenses to form storm clouds which
then move over rural areas.

While most just live with the heat,
some are fighting back, suggesting
green is the way to go. The architects

of this apartment complex in Arizona
estimate that by greening up the
terrace and roof, temperatures went
down 8 to 10 degrees. Taking you Beyond
the Forecast, I'm Brent Watts.>>
