The final chapter in the Harry
Potter series, book number seven...
"Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows,"... hit the stands just after
midnight.

About 50 people were at Barnes
and Noble at Valley View Mall for the
unveiling.

They were given wristbands rather
than waiting in line. The store also
held a "Potter Party" with different
activities around the store.

One lucky fan received the
store's first copy.

But it also celebrates the lives
of those who have battled the disease,
and those who have LOST their fight.

As Joe Dashiell reports...this
year... the names of three young people
were on the minds of many.

at Floyd County High School, many were
walking, and raising money, in their
memory.

rallied around the families of the
young cancer victims, but in the wake
of their deaths, organizers of the
event wondered how the community would
respond.

They got their answer Friday
night.

back in federal court in...

Abingdon...on Friday for SENTENCING.

Company executives were met by
about 40 people whose lives have been
"ruled" by the drug.

These are the faces of pain...
and addiction in some cases. Some are
also family mermbers of people who have
DIED from Oxycontin overdoses.

They came in response to a
judge's call for "public input" on the
benefits, abuse and mis-use of the
drug.

The hearing was scheduled after
Judge Jones CHALLENGED the validity of
the plea agreement.

In the end...he imposed the fine
called for in an earlier
deal....634-and-a -half-million
dollars.

Thursday caused a SCARE at Lewis Gale
Medical Center.

Gale ---turned out to be a weather

station.

A hospital employee had tied the
device to a tree.

But, the bomb unit DIDN'T KNOW
that...and used a robot to destroy it.

They say it looked
"unusual"....with wires and a "putty"
like substance on the outside.

Salem Police are NOT...filing
charges... and the hospital ISN'T...
taking action against the employee.

Roanoke Valley, and a popular
personality for more than THREE decades
has died.

Ted Rogers passed away Thursday

morning at his home in Roanoke County.
He was 79.

hopes of preventing diabetes may
actually worsen their odds.

A U-S trial shows that people who take
the supplement raised their risk of
diabetes by more than half, compared to
similar people taking placebos.

U-S researchers report an ingredient in
curry may help stimulate immune system

cells that gobble up the brain-clogging
proteins that mark Alzheimer's disease.

Scientists have isolated a compound
that appears to stimulate a specific
response against Alzheimer's symptoms,
and it may be possible to infuse this
compound into patients to treat the
incurable brain condition.

Heavy afternoon rains hit the
Texas HillCountry for several hours
Friday.

waterlogged ground and quickly ran into
creeks and streams.

In Austin, police closed low
water crossings and several other
places known to be flood prone.

The silver lining behind the rain
clouds is the lower temperatures the
rain brings.

Lower temperatures translate into
electicity bill savings.

A small earthquake jolted the San
Francisco Bay area Friday morning, but
damage was minimal.

In Oakland, there were NO reports
of damage or injuries.

The quake was described by one
Oakland resident as lasting about ten
seconds.

The U-S Geological Survey says
the magnitude four-point-two quake was
centered about two miles northeast of
Oakland.

threatening a small town.

Sarah Wolf is 21 years old.

She's being charged with the
"improper disposal" of a DEAD body.

If found guilty, she could face

residents about a possible SCAM.

Thursday night police responded
to a call in the Northwest region.

A 97-year-old woman said a man
CLAIMING he was from the "Western
Virginia Water Authority" asked to come
in.

She allowed him inside, and
noticed her purse was MISSING after he
left.

Police say the man does NOT
appear to be an employee of the
"Western Virginia Water Authority".
They believe he is operating a scam.

He is described as a middle aged,
white male with a heavy build.

was rewarded with diplomas Friday
afternoon, after a week of INTENSE

training.

The graduating class included 35
firefighters and police officers, who
attended the academy from througout the
state.

Roanoke County Fire and Rescue
established the Honor Guard last year,
and hosted the academy during their
training.

Those enrolled in the week-long
academy gained experience in "proper
conduct" for formal ceremonies, such as
graduations or funerals.

Some of their newly learned
skills were shown during the graduation
at West Salem Baptist Church.
