OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Bedford << This building has seen a lot of
(END SOT) uses in the last hundred years.

It's been a high school and an
elementary school.

But since the late 80's, it's
mostly just been used for storage.

Now - city council is hoping to
re-open the building, with a little
help from the public.

"WE'RE HOPING THAT SOMEONE OUT
THERE HAS THE RESOURCES AND A HOPE OR A
DREAM OF WHAT THE BUILDING COULD BE
USED FOR."

The city wants your ideas on how
to transform the property.

Officials say it could be used
for anything from a private business to
a youth center.

"WE'RE HOPING THERE'S AN IDEA OUT
THERE FOR A INDIVIDUAL OR A GROUP THAT
WE HAVEN'T THOUGHT OF."

City leaders do have a few

concerns about this property. One is
the lack of parking. There are only a
few spaces in front of the building
itself. The building is also right
next to Bedford Middle School - and
having a school so close by could end
up limiting the type of business that
comes in here.

"THERE ARE CERTAIN LIMITS ON THE
SIZE AND THE SCOPE AND THE NATURE OF
THE BUSINESS."

The building itself also needs a
lot of work - both inside and out.

Parents at the middle school have
complained about debris falling off the
building - putting students in danger.

That's why officials say the old
school needs to be fixed up now.

"WE ARE EITHER GOING TO HAVE TO
SPEND SOME SIGNIFICANT DOLLARS
STABILIZING IT, OR TEAR IT DOWN. OR
FIND AN ALTERNATE USE FOR IT."

Tearing it down is a last resort.

That's why they're looking for
anyone with a vision for what this

building could become.

"WE'LL BE GLAD TO TALK WITH
PEOPLE ABOUT THEIR IDEAS. JUST
REMEMBER, THEY NEED TO BE SERIOUS IDEAS
AND THEY NEED TO HAVE SERIOUS RESOURCES
AND SERIOUS MONEY BEHIND IT."

Officials hope to make a final
decision on the building's fate in the
next six months.

So while time may be running out
for this old school, the doors aren't
closed for good just yet.

Center. It's going to be another
pleasant night with variably cloudy
skies and lows in the mid and upper
50s. Wind will be light from the north.
Expect plently of sunshine early Monday
morning, but by the afternoon look for
partly sunny conditions. There's a
chance of an isolated shower or storm
Monday; mainly late in the afternoon.
The weather maps are showing low
pressure moving up the northeastern
coast over the next 48 hours. This
will keep heavy rain along the coast
and offshore. We are watching an area
of low pressure in the upper levels of
the atmosphere, which will provide a
fair amount of clouds this week, with
occasional showers and storms. Highs
are generally forecast in the low and
mid 80s this week with steadily
increasing humidity. Hope you enjoyed
this weekend, because right now it's
looking like scattered showers will
continue into next weekend. Have a

OQ=...NEWS 7 SPORTS << Virginia's championship city has
(END SOT) once again rolled out the red carpet

for 72 basketball teams from all over
the nation. 30 states are represented
in the event and more than 1000 players
and coaches will be shooting hoop
through next Saturday.

The host team for the event is
the Roanoke Stars - with players from
as far away as Harrisonburg.

CHAD CONNER

Being the host team hardly
warrants any preferential treatment.
The Stars had to open the tournament
against a team from Texas - that
featured a six-foot five inch 14 year
old post player.

CHAD CONNER

Those college coaches were on
hand for many of the opening games.
Tech's Beth Dunkenberger was among
those getting an eyeful of the young
talent and the exceptional speed.

collapse of Jean Van de Velde in the
1999 British Open, but Sergio Garcia's
loss today at Carnoustie is one that he
won't soon forget. He started the day
with a three shot lead, but watched it
quickly evaporate on the back nine
thanks to a balky putter.

ABC Sports Padraig Harrington made a Sunday :00 run closing with a 4-under 67, that
would have been better had he not found
the water twice at 18. But he was
still alive for a playoff at 7-under.

Garcia had this par effort at 18
for the win, but just burns the edge
and the two went to a four hole
playoff.

Sergio dug a hole, opening with
a double bogey, and needed this eagle
putt to drop to force more action.
Garcia gave it a run, but couldn't get
it to go down.

Harrington then knocked in the
bogey to win by one. He's the first
Irishman to win the British Open in 60
years, and it breaks an 8 year drought
for Europeans in the majors.
