(END SOT) Roanoke city animal control officers

caught the doe near the Rodeway Inn on Orange Avenue. Her fawn was picked in the same spot the next morning... but by then the mother had already been put down, based on advice from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The doe had been tranquilized and officials feared she might be shot illegally and eaten. That reasoning didn't sit well with a lot of viewers: "The excuse that even though it's not hunting season, if someone killed her and ate the meat they might get sick, is ridiculous to me!" Tonie Lugar wrote. "If someone kills a deer out of season, and eats it, and in turn ends up sick its their own fault and they deserve to be sick!" Another viewer asked "Did it ever occur to them to hold the deer until the drugs worked out of her system-- as if that is an excuse. Animal Control in Roanoke should be ashamed of themselves."
