morning.

blame anyone for questioning whether it
is indeed safe.

Shortly after the Liberty Road bridge
was struck, V-Dot crews came out and
surveyed the damage.

FOUND A FEW OF THE CONCRETE BEAMS HAD
BEEN MOVED AND THEY FOUND SOME OF THE
STEELE CABLES UNDERNEATH THE BRIDGE,
THE TENSIONING CABLES WERE EXPOSED.

But overall, V-Dot says the crash did
not cause any serious damage.

That may come as a surprise
considering this bridge has been hit
six times in the last five years.

Who could forget this incident back
in September 2002, when a backhoe on a
flatbed trailer hit the overpass,
taking some big chunks of concrete off
the bridge.

It's been struck so many times in
fact, the bridge is considered
structurally deficient.

THE BRIDGE COULD COLLAPSE.

But it's enough of a concern that
V-Dot inspects the bridge once a year,
rather than every two years which is
the norm.

We understand the Liberty Road bridge
was inspected just last Sunday and
crews found no major problems.

Today, James Clark stood trial.

Clark's facing numerous charges
including rape, abduction and forcible
sodomy.

One of the victims - a paraplegic
- testified today that Clark brutally

raped her and performed other sexual
acts with objects including a gun and a
lit cigarette.

He's also accused of raping her
caretaker, who was pregnant.

Clark's family doesn't believe
it.

the clock to try to make contact with
six miners trapped in a Utah Cole Mine.

A mine officials says it could be
early Friday morning before the hole is
drilled.

The six miners have been trapped

two officers from Montgomery County.

VO-NAT Corporal Eric Sutphin and

security officer Derrick McFarland died
last August trying to stop an escaped
inmate.

Now the sheriff's office and
Montgomery Regional Hospital are
co-sponsoring a memorial bike ride and
poker run this weekend.

The event is to raise money for
the families of the fallen heroes.

Terry McGrath thought of the idea
and hopes to see more than just
motorcycles at the event.

from April the 16th, were cemented into
the ground.

The memorial is Tech's first
major tribute to the victims.

The workers putting the stones in
place say this job is an honor.

record 101 and the low was 79 which was
a record high minimum for the date.
Locally tonight, Hazy skies continue

tonight with very muggy conditions once
again. Friday, we'll watch the approach
of a cool front. This may fire an
isolated (20% chance) storm during the
afternoon, but generally this is a
moisture starved boundary. Hot and
humid on Friday with highs back in the
90s. Roanoke and Danville may see some
new records. Once the cool front moves
east toward the coast, we'll be left
with warm weekend temperatures in the
upper 80s to near 90, however, the
humidity should come down a bit. High
pressure will keep our skies mostly to
partly sunny through the weekend and
into early next week. THURSDAY NIGHT:
Passing clouds with haze. Muggy. Low:
74 FRIDAY: Partly sunny & hot.
Isolated storm. High: 96 Hazy skies
continue tonight with very muggy

request to move customer services
outside Virginia.

Today the S-C-C said no way.

convince them they could move customer
services while maintaining quality.

the company to move functions like
marketing, sales and community

Bob McLelland Metro golf tournament
wrapped up today with Blacksburg barely
hanging on the win.

McLelland Metro - Final Round Day two of the 36 hole event was
played at the Botetourt Country Club.

Blacksburg came in with a huge
lead but almost let the tournament slip
away before holding on for a one stroke
win over Salem that rallied for 15
strokes down.

Franklin County and Cave Spring
completed the top four.

Brian Langely of Blacksburg had
the low score of the tourney and he
shot a 68 today.
