old freshman who loved community
service, but seeing her finished marker
brought him to tears.

struck the Liberty Road Bridge in
Roanoke.

It's led to new concerns whether the
overpass is safe.

morning when a tractor trailer heading
south on 581, hit the bridge.

Traffic was backed up for several
hours as V-Dot crews came in and
inspected the bridge for damage.

Shortly after the Liberty Road bridge
was struck, V-Dot crews came out and
surveyed the damage.

BEEN MOVED AND THEY FOUND SOME OF THE
STEELE CABLES UNDERNEATH THE BRIDGE,
THE TENSIONING CABLES WERE EXPOSED.

OQ=were exposed But overall, V-Dot says the crash did

not cause any serious damage.

That may come as a surprise
considering this bridge has been hit
six times in the last five years.

Who could forget this incident back
in September 2002, when a backhoe on a
flatbed trailer hit the overpass,
taking some big chunks of concrete off
the bridge.

It's been struck so many times in
fact, the bridge is considered
structurally deficient.

We understand the Liberty Road bridge
was inspected just last Sunday and
crews found no major problems.

learning in three hours, rescuers
believe the hole will be completely
drilled to communicate with the 6
trapped miners in Utah.

where the men are believed to be.

Crews are attempting to drill a
2-and-a-half inch hole to contact the
miners.

And at the same time rescue

workers are digging in the tunnel that
collapsed, but it could be a week or
more before they actually reach the

The men are believed to be nearly
two-thousand feet below the surface and
more than three miles from the mine
entrance.

two officers from Montgomery County is
fast approaching.

Locally tonight, Hazy skies continue
tonight with very muggy conditions once
again. Friday, we'll watch the approach
of a cool front. This may fire an
isolated (20% chance) storm during the
afternoon, but generally this is a
moisture starved boundary. Hot and
humid on Friday with highs back in the
90s. Roanoke and Danville may see some
new records. Once the cool front moves
east toward the coast, we'll be left
with warm weekend temperatures in the
upper 80s to near 90, however, the
humidity should come down a bit. High
pressure will keep our skies mostly to
partly sunny through the weekend and
into early next week. THURSDAY NIGHT:
Passing clouds with haze. Muggy. Low:

women at gunpoint.

Today, James Clark stood trial.

Clark's facing numerous charges
including rape, abduction and forcible
sodomy.

One of the victims - a paraplegic
- testified today that Clark brutally
raped her and performed other sexual

lit cigarette. Clark's also accused of
raping her caretaker, who was pregnant
at the time.

Clark's father doesn't believe
it.

wrapped up today with Blacksburg barely

Hollandsworth destroyed the field at
the 38th annual VIrginia State Golf
Association junior tournament in
Midlothian today.

Yesterday she shot a tournament
record 66 and then followed that up
today with a scorching 68.

Floyd finished the tournament with a
10-under par total.

She is the only player to ever
shoot two rounds in the 60s in the 38

2007 Group A State Tournament Lindsey Thompson - the rising
senior on Alan Cantrell's team has
verbally committed to play her college
hoops at UNC-Asheville in the Big
South.

She has been a two year starter
averaging 14 points a game for the Lady
Buffs on teams that have gone a
combined 56-2 in the past two seasons.

Lindsey also plays for Mike
McGuire in the Roanoke Stars AAU
program, and in June of this summer
she tore the ACL in her right knee. UNC
Asheville didn't let that deter them
and Lindsey is currently on the mend,
hoping to be back in action for Floyd
by January.

By the way - that now makes 5
Division I commitments for the Roanoke
Stars class of 2008.
