It s the first breakthrough in the on
going rescue effort. Crews finally

reached a cavity in the mine where the

trapped miners may be and dropped in a

microphone. But what they heard....was
silence.

SOT Richard Stickler/Mine Safety

Executive 02:35:37 UNFORTUNATELY WE
WERE NOT

ABLE TO GAIN ANY COMMUNICATION FROM THE
MINERS UNDERGROUND

Attached to the microphone is a steel
tube, which sucked out an air sample.

And in that, at least...there was some
good news. Plenty of oxygen and no

methane.

SOT Bob Murray/Mine Co-Owner: THAT IS

ALMOST PERFECT AIR TO SUPPORT HUMAN
LIFE

What the air sample did not detect was
carbon dioxide, the gas exhaled when

people breathe...

Manny Gallegus/Huntington, Utah: That
first hole into the mine is just two
and

a half inches wide. Workers are
drilling a second hole..big enough to

deliver

food and water....and to drop in a
powerful camera.

That's expected to happen by
Saturday... And what they're likely to
see is

pitch blackness. The miners' lamps will
have burned out by now and they could

be chilled to the bone, huddling in
58-degree air 150 stories below ground.

POSS SOT family member?

(graphic ) The six workers have been
trapped since the mine caved in on

Monday...they're family men,
hard-workers, some of them just in
their

twenties.

Digging both from the top and the side,
rescuers don't expect to reach the men

for at least a week. When they
do..family and friends will be there,
as they

have been every day, hoping to bring
them home.

will provide a 20%-30% chance of a

of the area is six to seven inches
below normal for the year. The Roanoke

about 0.50" of rain so far this August.
Heat and humidity will continue to be

his latest masterpiece-- a painting of

He's been trained for years to
paint, and his works have earned far
more than just PEANUTS.

One tourist bought one of his

His well- known work, the "The Lovely

the Guiness book two years ago as the
