GRAPHIC=Miners Trapped It's now been slightly more than a
week since six miners became trapped
deep in a Utah coal mine.
There's been no sight of them, and no
sounds from them.
But the rescue work continues above
and below the ground.
Susan Roberts has the latest from

With the rescue operation frustrated at
every turn, drill crews plan to bore a
third hole in a desperate attempt to
find 6 men trapped for over a week.
The new plan comes after a
high-resolution camera lowered into
where
authorities thought the miners could be
stuck found some equipment but little
else.
(SOT RICHARD STICKLER/MINE SAFETY AND
HEALTH ADMINISTRATION): "WE DID NOT SEE
ANY SIGN AT ALL OF ANY OF THE MINERS."
The first time the camera went down,
the lens got dirty. The second time,
there was only enough light to see 15
feet. The miners could be stuck in a
tunnel that's as much as a thousand
feet long.
(nats)
Underground, the digging continues but
work crews remain days away from even
getting close.
(SOT BOB MURRAY/CHAIRMAN, MURRAY
ENERGY): "UNDERGOUND IT HAS NOT GONE
WELL.....(underground pix)....THEY ARE
THE MOST DIFFICULT CONDITIONS THAT I
HAVE SEEN IN MY 50 YEARS OF MINING."
Susan Roberts/Stand-up
For family members that wait to hear
something, the silence is heartbreaking
-
and it's gets harder every day.
(SOT GAYLENE ARENSDORF/SISTER OF
TRAPPED MINER 131305): "IT DRIVES ME
CRAZY
TO THINK ABOUT WHAT HE MIGHT BE GOING
THROUGH."
Gaylene Arensdorf's brother Don is one
of those trapped men.
(SOT 131335): "HE'LL BE FIGHTING UNTIL
WE GET HIM OUT..........THAT'S ALL
WE'RE HOPING FOR. THAT THEY CAN GET
HIM OUT, BRING HIM HOME TO US."
(nats)
In this small town, everyone is tied to
the miners and their families.
(SOT NO NAME/TOO QUICK TOO FONT
125955): "WE TAUGHT THEIR KIDS, WE KNOW
THE
RELATIVES."
(nats)
So as crews dig and drill, the
community waits and worries. With some
praying
and some mourning.........All hoping
for a miracle.

With the rescue operation frustrated at
every turn, drill crews plan to bore a
third hole in a desperate attempt to
find 6 men trapped for over a week.
The new plan comes after a
high-resolution camera lowered into
where
authorities thought the miners could be
stuck found some equipment but little
else.
(SOT RICHARD STICKLER/MINE SAFETY AND
HEALTH ADMINISTRATION): "WE DID NOT SEE
ANY SIGN AT ALL OF ANY OF THE MINERS."
The first time the camera went down,
the lens got dirty. The second time,
there was only enough light to see 15
feet. The miners could be stuck in a
tunnel that's as much as a thousand
feet long.
(nats)
Underground, the digging continues but
work crews remain days away from even
getting close.
(SOT BOB MURRAY/CHAIRMAN, MURRAY

and it's gets harder every day.
(SOT GAYLENE ARENSDORF/SISTER OF

Gaylene Arensdorf's brother Don is one
of those trapped men.

WE GET HIM OUT..........THAT'S ALL

the miners and their families.
