carbon monoxide leak at the Collegiate
Suites apartment building in
Blacksburg.
But two others remain in critical
condition.

Elizabeth Burgin of Ashburn, Carolyn
Dorman of Potomac, Maryland, and
Nichole Howarth of Chesterfield are
"conscious and alert," and in stable
condition.
All are expected to remain at Duke for
one to two days for further evaluation
and treatment.

remain in critical condition at this
hour.
The hospital had said earlier it would
not release any more condition updates,
but it is once again doing so.

same apartment.
They were discovered unresponsive in
their beds yesterday morning. The
carbon monoxide leak sent 23 people in
all to hospitals. Everyone treated at
Montgomery Regional Hospital and New
River Valley Medical Center has been
released.

was supposed to be a day to remember
the victims of the April 16th tragedy.
As crews were attending to victims at
the apartments yesterday, Virginia Tech
was dedicating a memorial to the April
victims.
That brings us today, which is the
first regular school day at Tech since
gunfire erupted on campus four months
ago.
26-thousand students are beginning a
new semester.

from a campus security group that has
now filed a complaint with the U-S
Department of Education.
In its complaint filed this
morning, Security on Campus,
Incorporated says Tech violated federal
law by waiting too long to notify
students of the first shootings at
West-Ambler Johnston Dormitory.
Security On Campus is
asking for a federal investigation into
the April 16th incidents.

a trip to Blacksburg in the next few
weeks, and looks forward to visiting
with students.

The jet burst into flames today at
an airport in Okinawa, Japan after
arriving from Taiwan.
Officials say passengers fled on
inflated emergency slides before the
Boeing 7-37 burst into a fireball.
The pilot jumped from the cockpit
window just seconds before the
explosion.
Authorities aren't sure what
triggered the fire, but they don't
suspect terrorism.

summer home in Connecticut.
Her publicist says Helmsley died of
heart failure.
Helmsley and her husband ran a five

estate empire that included managing
the Empire State Building.
She served 18 months in prison on
tax evasion charges.
Helmsley earned the "queen of mean"
reputation after a former housekeeper
testified she heard Helmsley say: "Only
the little people pay taxes."
Leona Helmsley was 87.

is trying to regain a sense of normalcy
as it begins a new school year.
Yesterday, the university dedicated a
memorial to the 32 students and faculty
killed on April 16.

cup got under way Friday in Buenos
Aires .
479 couples from more than 150 cities
around the world are competing.
Among the countries represented---
Japan, Colombia, Greece, and Brazil.
The winning couple in each dance
category will earn 22- hundred dollars
in prize money.
The contest wraps up this weekend.
