Witnesses say they saw a tornado
touch down briefly in downtown
Lynchburg this afternoon.

Whether it was actually a tornado, the
extraordinarily high wind knocked down
trees and tree limbs, sending a scare
through many residents.

a funnel cloud touch down near the
Fifth Street Bridge, just a little
south of here ... according to radio
traffic, the cloud touched down for a
moment and then went back up into the
clouds.

But the storm ... whether it was a
tornado or not ... left behind a good
deal of damage.

Trees and limbs were down all
across the downtown area, blocking some
of the roads

It all was over in a matter of just
a few minutes.

Ellie Terrell was working in the
SunTrust Bank on Main Street when the
sky turned black and she went to look
outside.

complex where the leak occurred say
they will install C-O detectors in the
apartments.

Incorporated will install hard-wired
carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in
the 212 units.

Carbon monoxide monitors are not
required by law.

The company has also hired an
independent contractor to inspect every
unit in the complex for safety issues
so students can return as soon as
possible.

The investigation into the
incident is still underway.

Blacksburg Police plan to release
a final report on it next week.

sparked a brush fire in Roanoke County
this afternoon.

responded to Starlight Lane shortly

The fire burned about three
acres, but never posed a threat to any
homes.

Late this afternoon firefighters

fire this morning by climbing out of a
bedroom window.

was.

Wendell and Terri Brown and their
two children were not injured, but
their home was destroyed.

The fire started around 1:50 in
the morning and was under control in
just 16 minutes.

The damage is estimated at
95-thousand dollars.

One of the family dogs had to be
treated at the scene with oxygen.

Another escaped unharmed, but two
cats and a third dog died in the fire.

EVENT=TRAFFIC ALERT BANNER pavement-repair project is creating a

major backup on Interstate 81.

One southbound lane is closed
between mile markers 103 and 105.
That's just south of Radford in Pulaski
County.

The lane being closed has traffic
backed up for about seven miles.

V-DOT says the closure is
temporary. Crews hope to finish the
work by tomorrow morning.

with very strong winds are moving off
to the east this afternoon and should
be out of the area soon. Until these
pass, hometowns in Southside and
Central Virginia should be alert of
winds in excess of 60mph and torrential
downpours. We've had several reports of
funnel clouds and wind damage in
Lynchburg and Forest. A weak cool
front will knock temperatures down a
bit this afternoon, but it will still
be rather warm and definitely humid.
The combination will provide the
opportunity for isolated storm
development during the afternoon and
early evening. In fact, the rest of the
week calls for partly sunny skies and a
20%-30% chance of showers and
thundershowers, mainly in the
afternoon. Any storm that develops
could contain gusty wind, very heavy
rain, lightning and hail. Damaging wind
seems to be the major threat with

storms today. High heat will also be a
major weather headline. Record highs
possible again by the end of the week
as highs near 100. Right now, the

felony homicide trial is now underway
in Radford.

calling its witnesses.

One of prosecution's key
witnesses was the last to take the
stand today and testified she was at
Franklin's final shoot the day she died
and saw Shell put drops into Franklin's
wine glass.

VO NAT Prosecutors played Shell's 9-1-1
call to alert police that his
girlfriend Marion Franklin had suffered
an apparent drug overdose.

They told the jury Franklin had a
drug problem, but Shell gave her a
lethal dose of morphine in his studio
.. then committed sex crimes with her
body.

Shell's defense attorney says the
two were in love and Shell struggled to
help Franklin with her drug problem.

His attorney also said several
key pieces of evidence where mishandled
by police, and important forensic
evidence was destroyed.

staff decided to permanently move Ike
Whitaker to wide receiver for this
season.

got completely washed out up in
Michigan. The 3rd try proved to be the
charm.

ESPN2 The Start of the race was delayed
a half hour due to Fog in the area, but
that cleared and racing finally began.

Late in the race, Jeff Gordon the
pole sitter had some issues as he gets
tapped from behind by Matt Kenseth,
sending the 24 car spinning down into
the grass. Gordon then had some
problems getting his car our of the
infield.

Kurt Busch had to endure a
Green-White-Checker finish but he had
absolutely no problems holding off
Martin Truex Junior to win his second
race of the season. It also help the
Number 2 Car maintain the last spot in
the Chase for the Championship.
