hurricaneDean is barreling across
Mexico s Yucatan Peninsula.
(more natz)
The storm made landfall early this
morning in a sparsely populated area
south
of Cancun with winds topping 150 miles
per hour. Dean s 12 to 18 foot storm
surge could flood towns far inland.
In Cancun, many tourists cleared out,
but an estimated 20 thousand
vacationers
either chose to stay or couldn t get a
flight out.
(SOT/MOS)
We weren't sure what the airport was
like, so we're going to ride it out.
(Gwen Belton Bridge)
And while Dean will not hit the U.S.
head on.it is a pretty good bet the
outer
bands of this huge storm could reach
south Texas.
Sot: Lt. John Melendez/Texas National
Guard (13:50:38)
There could be lots of devastating
rainfall; we need to prep for that.
The Texas National Guard is staging
supplies and shelters have been set up
in
28 communities that might be impacted
by massive storm that cover 75 square
miles.
(graphic)
Dean lost some steam when it reached
land, but as the storm approaches the
Bay
of Campeche, forecasters say it will
likely gain strength as it heads for
open
water and Mexico s lucrative oil rigs.
(natz)
So... the most intense Atlantic storm
to make landfall in two decades may
continue to inflict harm in the days to
come.
