images captured by NASA's satellites
over the summer.
Many locations in the south set
record-low rainfall amounts with some
receiving no rain at all. This is what
a drought looks like from space. The
lack of plant growth is shown in this
image. Areas where plants are more
sparse are brown, while
better-than-average growth is green.
Notice how little green is on THIS map.
Now, compare that to Texas, just a few
states away, where it's the WETTEST
summer on record. Some areas receiving
over 300% of their average rainfall,
which stimulated plant growth. The
black spot in western Texas is where
plant growth was 100% above average.
The summer's scorching heat wave is
clear from this satellite which shows
heat energy radiated from the Earth.
The brightest red and yellow areas are
the hottest, and blues and white
coolest, which is where the clouds are.
Satellites can even track the above
normal WATER temperatures in the Gulf
and Caribbean. Water that is warm
enough to fuel hurricanes is yellow,
orange, and red. Now watch where Dean
went from being a Tropical Storm to a
hurricane. Pretty neat what you can
gather from hundreds of miles away.
