GRAPHIC=EAST CAROLINA Virginia Tech opens up its

season on Saturday against East
Carolina.

The Pirates come into Lane
Stadium as a big time underdog, and now
there's word they may not have their
quarterback.

Projected starter Rob Kass was
arrested over the weekend for Driving
While Impaired.

Head Coach Skip Holtz said that
he is aware of the incident, and had
talked about the issue with Athletic
Director Terry Holland.

They plan to announce by tomorrow
whether he will be suspended.

appearance in a Richmond court, Michael
Vick promised to do better and turn his

life around.

One of his former coaches and
mentors says in order for those words
to turn into actions- Vick will have to
find a way to keep some key figures of
his past from creeping into his future.

Mike Stevens has more.

OQ=...who you are." << Not long after Vick walked onto
(END SOT) the stage at Madison Square Garden

making history as the first black
quarterback ever taken number one in
the NFL draft - his dog fighting
interest was also just beginning.

Jim Cavanaugh is Virginia Tech's
recruiting coordinator and the man who
recruited Vick to Blacksburg. He is a
father of two and a grandfather of four
- and he also has been a father figure
to many of the Tech players he's

recruited over the years.

Coach Cav first got to know Vick
in 1997, along with his brother Marcus
and Mom Brenda back when they lived in
the Newport News projects. At the time
- his Mom drove a school bus and Vick
was the toast of Warwick high school.
But as Vick's life changed and his
wallet expanded his circle of friends
remained the same.

JIM CAVANAUGH

Cavanaugh sites individuals like
Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan as
examples of athletes who made it to the
top of their sport, but had strong
enough personalities to rid themselves
of bad influences - something Vick
obviously hasn't been strong enough or
willing enough to do.
