rescue squad has had some major
problems over the last two weeks, and
it's not out of the woods yet.
It has been shut down again.

April State inspectors shut the group
down during the mid-part of this month
for several violations.
The squad was back in business
until last night.
That's when Henry County's Board
of Supervisors and the Martinsville
City Council decided the crew is still
not stable enough to operate.
Officials say the squad has
failed to answer more than 60 percent
of its emergency calls over the last
year, among other things.
For now, the Martinsville Fire
Department and E-M-S will handle all
calls in the city.
In the county, those calls will
be taken care of by Stone Ambulance
Service.

charges.

A Sheltie puppy named "Faith"
suffered from mange.
Large patches of fur were missing from
her face.
"Daisy Mae," The Poodle, was

A third charge involved a
pregnant goat with puncture wounds,
presumably bites marks.
All three of the animals were
confiscated by Franklin County animal
control May 16.
The vet says they've responded
well to proper care, including
anti-biotics and topical treatment of
their injuries.

A new study shows that pregnant
mothers who have above normal blood
sugar levels are much more likely to
have overweight children.

The condition is a common one.
During pregnancy the body needs extra
insulin and if a woman's pancreas has
trouble producing it her blood sugar
levels rise.

"IT USUALLY GOES AWAY AFTER THE
PREGNANCY."
But according to a new study it can
have a lasting effect on the baby.
Researchers found gestational diabetes
doubles a child's risk of becoming
overweight.
And the higher the mother's blood sugar
level during pregnancy...... the
greater her kid's chance of being obese
by age five.

Scientists aren't sure why this
happens.
Some experts believe when a fetus is
exposed to high blood sugar they may
develop a certain sensitivity to
insulin.
They carry this into childhood putting
them at risk of obesity and eventually
developing diabetes.

there's good news.
If the condition is caught and treated
early a child's obesity risk is
normalized.

Patients are treated with medication
and changes to diet.
Anna's been able to avoid that but has
to regularly check her blood sugar to
make sure it stays in normal range.
