Blacksburg They're expecting more than
66-thousand fans to turn out for
today's game.
As you may be able to tell, a
small crowd is already gathering behind
me.

VO-NAT They're here for the ESPN gameday
show that will air live on ESPN from
10-noon.
Fans came here expecting a game
like none other.
Of course, it's the first game of
the season, but it's also the first
football game since the shootings in
April.
To honor those who lost their
lives, before the game even starts,
there will be a moment of silence, some
f-15 fighter jets will fly overhead.
Fans will also watch a minute
long tribute video.
Now some of the fans we've seen
out here are holding signs thanking
schools for their support.
And actually today before the
game starts, East Carolina will present
a hundred-thousand dollar donation to
the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund.
Governor Tim Kaine and Virginia
Tech President Charles Steger are
expected to be here for that
presentation.

yesterday...the jury recommended
Radford Photographer Bob Shell...get 32
and half years in prison...plus a five
thousand dollars.

Thursday The jury found Shell GUILTY of
"involuntary manslaughter" and seven
other SEX and drug related charges.
This conviction stems from the
2003 death of 19 year-old Marion
Franklin.
She died of a MORPHINE OVERDOSE
following a photo shoot at Shell's
Radford studio.
His formal sentencing hearing is
October 26.
That's when the judge will decide
to ACCEPT OR DENY the jury's
recommendation.
In the meantime, Bob Shell will
be in the New River Valley Regional
Jail.

Students at a school in Port
Arthur, Texas got their Labor Day
weekend off to an early start Friday
because of a lightning strike.

Investigators think Edison Middle
School was hit by lightning late
Thursday night, causing a damaging
fire.
The fire was quickly contained,
but electricity to the school was shut
off because of wiring damage.
School should resume next
Tuesday, after the Labor Day holiday.

It was just another Friday night
high school football game, but for a
small town in Kansas it is another step
towards recovery.
Even though it wasn't on their
home field, the Greensburg Rangers and
their fans were excited about the first
game of the season.
It is the first game since a
massive tornado wiped out their town in
May.
Their equipment was destroyed in
the tornado but the Kansas City Chiefs
stepped up to help pay for new
equipment.
