With a battle looming in Congress over
the future of the four-year-old war,
the President's surprise trip was an
attempt to head off increasing pressure
for a withdrawal by highlighting the
war's successes.

A year ago, Anbar province was
dominated by al Qaeda. But local sunni
leaders
turned against the terror group and
teamed up with U-S forces. Now the
remote
region is the White House model for all
Iraq.
(SOT Bush): "In Anbar you're seeing
first-hand the dramatic differences
that
can come when the Iraqis are more
secure. In other words, you're seeing
success."
The visit came just as Congress returns
from a monthlong vaction, with
Democrats intent on forcing the
administration to change tactics.

But the President tried to beat them to
the punch BY DOING what he has refused
to do for months - leave the door open
to a drawdown of U-S forces.
(SOT Bush): "If the kind of success we
are now seeing continues, it will be
possible to maintain the same level of
security with fewer American forces."
But he STRESSED that any change in
force levels will be determined by
military
strategy, not political convenience.
(SOT Bush): "Those decisions will be
based on a calm assessment by our
military commanders on the ground - not
a nervous reaction by Washington
politicians."
Those commanders will deliver to
Congress next week a pivotal report
assessing
the effects of the troop surge...that
the White House hopes will match the
enthusiasm of the Presidential pitstop.

that has stuck with many of us - Tech
senior Kevin Sterne being carried out
of Norris Hall by four policemen.
Sterne was shot in the leg and
had tied an electrical cord around it
to stop the bleeding.
Sterne's mother - Suzanne Grimes
said in her e-mail to News 7 - the
Virginia Tech review panel's report did
not inclue information from ALL
survivors.
Including Kevin, seen on campus in a
story we aired last winer.
His mother says after graduation
- it was widely published that Kevin
was returning home to the Pittsburgh
area for recovery - but said Tech never
made a phone call that would have
allowed him to participate in the
panel's fact finding report.
Grimes also focused on the errors
on April 16th.
She said quote "it is not
unreasonable on Virginia Tech's part to
acknowledge their errors; however they
still defend their actions that day."
She wrote about Seung Hei Cho
Sung He Jo - "He may have been the gun
man, but the errors on the part of so
many contributed to this horrific
massacre."
And Grimes called for the
resignation of administration and other
officials saying it would only be fair
to the Virginia Tech community. >>

Governor Kaine and the members of the

mourning the loss of three teenage
girls who were killed in an accident on
Sunday.
State police say speed was a
factor -- and the 15 year old driver
was too young to legally be behind the
wheel.

Six teenaged girls ranging from
14 to 17 years old were riding in a
pickup when it veered off the road,
flipped and caught fire.

Arizona town are remembering the
sisters who fell into a mine shaft over
the weekend.

Thirteen-year-old Rikki Howard was
killed and her sister, 10-year-old
Casie Hicks, remains in serious
condition at a Las Vegas hospital.
They were on an ATV that tumbled 125

One of the rescue workers who was
lowered to the bottom of the mine shaft
talked about Rikki essentially saved
her sister Casie's life..

condition at a Las Vegas hospital.

With a battle looming in Congress over
the future of the four-year-old war,
the President's surprise trip was an
attempt to head off increasing pressure
for a withdrawal by highlighting the
war's successes.

A year ago, Anbar province was
dominated by al Qaeda. But local sunni
leaders
turned against the terror group and
teamed up with U-S forces. Now the
remote
region is the White House model for all
Iraq.
(SOT Bush): "In Anbar you're seeing
first-hand the dramatic differences
that
can come when the Iraqis are more
secure. In other words, you're seeing
success."
The visit came just as Congress returns
from a monthlong vaction, with
Democrats intent on forcing the
administration to change tactics.

But the President tried to beat them to
the punch BY DOING what he has refused
to do for months - leave the door open
to a drawdown of U-S forces.
(SOT Bush): "If the kind of success we
are now seeing continues, it will be
possible to maintain the same level of
security with fewer American forces."
But he STRESSED that any change in
force levels will be determined by
military
strategy, not political convenience.

based on a calm assessment by our

a nervous reaction by Washington
politicians."
Those commanders will deliver to
Congress next week a pivotal report
assessing
the effects of the troop surge...that

e-mail of her thoughts about the state
review panel's report.
In it she calls for top campus
administrators to resign.

that has stuck with many of us - Tech
senior Kevin Sterne being carried out
of Norris Hall by four policemen.
Sterne was shot in the leg and
had tied an electrical cord around it
to stop the bleeding.
Sterne's mother - Suzanne Grimes
said in her e-mail to News 7 - the
Virginia Tech review panel's report did
not inclue information from ALL
survivors.
Including Kevin, seen on campus in a
story we aired last winer.
His mother says after graduation
- it was widely published that Kevin
was returning home to the Pittsburgh
area for recovery - but said Tech never
made a phone call that would have
allowed him to participate in the
panel's fact finding report.
Grimes also focused on the errors
on April 16th.
She said quote "it is not
unreasonable on Virginia Tech's part to
acknowledge their errors; however they
still defend their actions that day."
She wrote about Seung Hei Cho
Sung He Jo - "He may have been the gun
man, but the errors on the part of so
many contributed to this horrific
massacre."
And Grimes called for the
resignation of administration and other
officials saying it would only be fair
to the Virginia Tech community. >>

In the e-mail Grimes thanked
Governor Kaine and the members of the
Virginia Tech Review Panel.
She also thanked everyone who
sent cards and gifts to Kevin - as well
as those who contributed to the Hokie

into six air conditioning units at the
Salem Ridge apartments last night,
causing about 15-thousand dollars'
damage.
We are told there was no damage
to the apartment building itself.
Police say Pizarro had an infant
up front with her who was not in a
child seat. The Baby was taken to
Lewis-Gale to be checked for injuries.

GRAPHIC=Fatal Accicent Three Carroll County families are
mourning the loss of three teenage
girls who were killed in an accident on
Sunday.
State police say speed was a
factor -- and the 15 year old driver
was too young to legally be behind the
wheel.

It happened in the Cana
community near the North Carolina
border.
Six teenaged girls ranging from
14 to 17 years old were riding in a
pickup when it veered off the road,
flipped and caught fire.

killed.
Leonard and Turman were riding in

zones and neighborhoods where children
walk to school or wait for the bus to

drivers to brush up on Virginia law...
Passing a bus that is loading or
unloading is considered reckless
driving.
Yellow flashing lights mean the
bus is getting ready to stop and so
should you.
If convicted of passing a bus
that has its red lights on... and is
stopped to load or unload... you will
receive a six-point violation that will
stay on your driving record for
11-years.
