figure out who killed a man early this
morning.

California is now blamed for at least
two deaths.

Firefighters found an elderly
couple in their apartment where the
temperature reached 106 degrees.

The couple had NO air conditioning.

Forecasters, meantime, say there may
finally be some relief from the heat on
the horizon.

workers braved the heat to restore
power to the people. More than
20-thousand customers left powerless
when a record breaking surge of demand
from air conditioners overwhelmed the
electric system.

worsening western drought you'd think a

thunder storm or two would be a good
thing. Yes and no. East of Los Angeles,
lightning from several storms ignited
bone-dry brush and fire spread to
nearby houses.

NARR: So, what do you do in Southern
California to cool off? Go to the
beach, of course. But there was little
relief even there. Temperatures were
sizzling at the Pacific's edge too.
