News 7's Justin McLeod has
uncovered new details. Justin what
have you learned?

Natasha, we received a number of
documents through the Freedom of
Information Act.

LIVE=Justin Full LIVE FULL

*CG standup Justin McLeod

problem dates back to 1999 and that's
not the only distubing thing we found.

OQ=what would you have it at school? <<((NAT SOUND OF TEACHER SAYING "THANKS

FOR BEING PATIENT"))

Patience is a good way to put it,
since students have been uprooted after
a rat infestation at Fairview
Elementary.

Parents say it's been a problem for
years now.

SOT FULL

TAMIKA HORACE/PARENT: LAST YEAR MY SON
HE HAD A RAT IN HIS CLASSROOM, IT WAS
DEAD IN THE WALLS AND THE SMELL WAS SO
BAD.

(END SOT)

And that's not the only incident.

Memos provided by the school system
reveal during 2006, a teacher turned in
14 bottles of glue with the tops eaten
off of them. During that same year,
"one rat ran across a room during SOL
testing. That same memo indicates the
rats are now being noticed regulary by

students.

In another undated memo, many
teachers hear several large animals
running through the ceiling during
school hours.

We shared this information with school
board chairman David Carson.

SOT FULL

JUSTIN MCLEOD: I THINK IT'S A FAIR
QUESTION, DID SOMEONE DROP THE BALL
HERE?

DAVID CARSON: CLEARLY.

(END SOT)

That's because the problem continued
into 2007.

For example, the principal reported
she pulled a large rat out of a trap at
the beginning of summer school.

By August, someone complained to the
Health Department. An inspection found
droppings, and several dead rats had
been recovered from the ceiling because
of poison that had been laid out.

During a followup visit last week,
inspectors found large number of rodent
droppings under cooking equipment.

They also found droppings under a
work table, in the dishwashing room,
and under an ice cream freezer.

SOT FULL

JUSTIN McLEOD/REPORTING: CAN WE BE
REASSURED THAT PEOPLE WILL BE HELD
ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS?

DAVID CARSON: ABSOLUTELY.

(END SOT)

Parents expect it. Many are
surprised none of their children got
sick because of the rats.

SOT FULL

ASHLY GORDON/PARENT: THEY HAVE TO
PLAY, DO THEIR WORK. YOU WOULDN'T HAVE
IT AT HOME, WHY WOULD YOU HAVE IT AT
SCHOOL?

(END SOT)>>

LIVE=Justin Full LIVE FULL

We also have a memo from a
teacher pleading with the school system
in 2006 to take care of the rodents.

In it the teacher says quote I
pray everyday that a little one or a
big one does not run out in the
daytime.

DOUBLE BOXES=Plasma Screen DOUBLE BOXES

Natasha, the memo indicates the
teacher's husband wanted her to
transfer to another school because of
the rodents.

Justin, I am curious were

exterminators ever called in to
Fairview?

They were Natasha, but apparently
is the center of controversy right now
and we'll have more on that tonight at
11.

Unless it's a severe, extended
case of lead exposure -children usually

don't have any symptoms, but in extreme
cases exposure can be deadly and cause
brain damage.

Dr. Kerkering warns that children
under five are especially vulnerable
because there's major brain development
during those years and children are
prone to putting things in their mouth.

VO-NAT The company made the announcement

earlier today.

The new models include an iPod
Nano with a two and a half in screen
for watching movies and playing games.

The new Nano should be in stores
starting this weekend.

Apple also announced a new
version of its iPhone, which was
unveiled earlier this summer.

The company has already sold more
than 100 million iPods, but sales have
been drifting since last year's holiday
shopping season and profit margins are
shrinking.
