fighting to save its reputation.

VO-NAT This is the 3rd time in five weeks

that the company has been forced to
recall toys because of lead paint.

The recalled products include
Barbie furniture, the geo trax
locomotive and bongo band drums....but
does not include barbie DOLLS.

Certainly, this is NOT the time
any toy company wants to have mud on

stock for Christmas.

But the problem isn't just hitting
Mattel.... 80 percent of all toys sold

it's just not enough.

bwatts@wdbj7.com Robin, late summer into fall is a
great time to select and plant trees
and shrubs. But planting them in dusty
soil is a big no no. Bruce Feldburg has

a neat trick that can increase the
likelihood your plant will survive.

ENG=1 SOT FULL

SOT FULL < INQ=Down here I dug... here I dug a hole and you can see how

dry it is. The one-inch of rain per
week factor is good rule of thumb for
maintaining an established landscape,
but new installations will usually
require more moisture. Even when the
storm clouds open wide and the rain
pours down in buckets...if it's not a
good soaking rain, you can figure it
will be time to water soon again. If
you're planting a tree or shrub for the
first time, dig a large hole and fill
the hole with water. Newly installed
trees and shrubs will require more
water than their established equals.
Watering may require up to 5 gallons on
a tree, 1 gallon on a shrub and 1 quart
on a flower may be needed. Simply
holding a hose on a plant may not be
the best way to provide water.
Typically the water comes out faster
than the soil can absorb it and you end
up wasting most of the water to runoff.
Use of soaker hoses can save you water
and properly provide water to shrub

beds.>>

GRAPHIC=AVALANCHE Good afternoon everybody and

welcome to the midweek ticker.

The Salem Avalanche opens the
playoffs tonight at Kinston. It's kind
of an unbalanced playoff format in that
Salem will have to play all of the
games in the three game series on the
road.

The Indians won over 80 games
this season, and have a stacked lineup
from top to bottom.

Salem manager Jim Pankovits knows
that the Avs have their work cut out
for them in the best 2 out of three
series.

GRAPHIC=UVA The Virginia Cavaliers are having

to circle the wagons this week in
Charlottesville as they are not
defending their embarrassing loss to
Wyoming, but they're also having to
justify going to a two quarterback
system after just one game of the
season.

But Groh says the passing game is
lacking any kind of punch and having
freshman quarterback Peter Lalich as
another option - can only help.
