odor from a dead rat at Westside
Elementary forced administrators to
keep the windows open to air out the
school.

As a result, students had to wear
their coats in class.

That's one of many eye opening
examples we've uncovered.

When you send your kids off to school
you'd expect it to be free of rodents
so we asked the Health Department how
common are rats in schools.

But in Roanoke City Schools it's
actually quite common.

Our research found in the last two
years, more than half of the city
school's had rats and mice, or evidence
of them.

Documents provided by the school

system show the extent of the problem.

Take William Fleming High School.

In October 2006- it appears rodents
are in the ceiling tiles and are eating
through.

The following month, 3 mice were
found in a trap.

By December, someone wrote "the mice
are just getting worse, please ask
exterminator to rush.

Across town at Patrick Henry, there
were a number of problems in the older
buildings.

In 2006 for example, rats were found
roaming around in the classrooms in old
McGuilkin Hall. Teachers even found
droppings on their desk.

The following year, 13 large and
small rats were caught in that same
building on one day alone.

Next door at Raleigh Court, someone
last January reported an animal in the
ceiling is moving around.

Last April, at Fallon Park Elementary
a large rat the size of a baby kitten
was found in the kitchen.

Nearby at Jackson Middle, someone
reports a rat as big as dog in 2006.

Some schools had an even bigger
problem. At Addison Middle for
example, mice and rats are found last
May throughout the whole building.

There was a similar infestation at
Lincoln Terrace back in 2006.

The school system insists these
problems were taken care of but you may
be asking yourself, aren't rats a
health risk? The simple answer is
yes.

country today to mark the sixth
anniversary of the September 11th
attacks.

ringing church bells and a moment of

planes hit the World Trade Center
towers.

First responders to Ground Zero
along with city workers read the names
of the two thousand 750 people who died
in the attacks on New York City.

was held to honor those who died there.

One hundred and 84 people were
killed.

Those victims were remembered

during a moment of silence.

accident that killed three teenagers
earlier this month in Carroll County.

Authorities have charged the 15
year old driver from Cana with reckless
driving, driving without a license, and
transporting people under the age of 16
in the back of a pickup truck.

a key piece of evidence in a deadly hit
and run investigation in
Christiansburg.

Investigators found a box of
toothpicks inside a stolen jeep. One
had been chewed.

VO-NAT 47-year old Anthony Edward Adams

is charged with stealing that jeep.

According to search warrants

filed today, an officer saw Adams with
the box of toothpicks and police have
even requested his DNA and
fingerprints.

Police believe the stolen jeep
found abandoned at the Citgo Station
was actually involved in a hit and run
accident with a motorcyclist.

22 year old Gregory Jackson was
killed in that wreck.

Adams has not been charged with
the accident, but it appears police are
building a case against him.

Frank Cassell is going to prison.

Cassell appeared before a federal
judge this morning, saying he stood
there "in deep contrition."

"My life will never be the same,"
Cassell told Judge James Turk.

The retired sheriff was indicted
on Halloween last year, along with a
dozen of his deputies.

The government portrayed the case
as a major public corruption scandal.

In May, Cassell pled guilty to
one count of making a false statement.

He made the device back in 19-82

Katrina, communities like Gulfport,
Mississippi are making progress toward
recovery.

But many residents are still
living in FEMA trailers, and still
struggling to rebuild their lives.

from his third trip to the gulf coast,
and tonight he updates the story of one
man there, who lost his home when the
storm rolled ashore.

home, and waiting for his FEMA trailer
to arrive.

The houses across Second Street
provided some of the most striking
images in the city.

Today, Bethea is still living in
that FEMA trailer. still waiting to
clear the lot, while he works out a
dispute with his bank.

But he's renovating a home his
mother once lived in across the
street... Grateful for the volunteers
from other states who've made it
possible.

THE CASINOS HAVE REOPENED HERE IN
GULFPORT PROVIDING NEEDED JOBS, BUT
JUST A FEW BLOCK AWAY DOWNTOWN IS STILL
HURTING.

While the debris that littered
the waterfront has been hauled away,
major landmarks damaged by the
hurricane are now history, and the
downtown district that looked like a
blast zone two years ago still has many
empty storefronts.

Former Roanoke resident Billy
Bova says there's no question that
Gulfport has seen a lot of progress in
the last two years, but problems like
skyrocketing insurance rates continue
to slow the recovery, worries about
hurricane season still weigh on
everyone's minds.
