Henry County's long-time sheriff
is going to prison.

The 69-year old lawman was

sentenced today to an 8-month prison
term and fined 15-thousand dollars.

NO SUPER Frank Cassell was indicted along
with 19 others last October. The
indictment was returned under seal...
until state and federal agents rounded
up the sheriff and the rest of those
charged.

At first he took administrative
leave from the sheriff's office, pled
not guilty and declared he would
"vigorously defend himself."

Two weeks after he was indicted,
Cassell "retired."

In late May, he changed his plea
to: "GUILTY."

(END SOT) Cassell's lawyers said he should

serve no more than six months of home
confinement.

Government attorneys wanted
Cassell to serve a five- year prison

term.

The court reminded the prosecutor
that Cassell had pled guilty to just
one count of making a false statement.

Prosecutor Tom Bondurant
agreed but said that false statement
was an attempt to cover up drug dealing
and money laundering.

20:16:07

MR. BONDURANT MADE POWERFUL ARGUMENTS
FOR A HIGHER SENTENCE. BUT AT THE END
OF THE DAY, IT'S A PERSONAL DECISION
WITH THE JUDGE. AND WE RESPECT THAT
DECISION.

Senior Judge James Turk gave
Cassell credit for accepting
responsibility, though he also noted
the sheriff had abused his position of
trust.

Cassell himself told the judge he
took great pride in having served his
fellow man for 50 years in law
enforcement.

He said he felt he'd made Henry
County "a better place," but he also
conceded his" life will never be the
same" and his shame will stay with him

forever.

20:18:02

THE GOVERNMENT ASKED FOR FIVE YEARS
TODAY. THE JUDGE I THINK LISTENED TO
THE ARGUMENTS. WE BELIEVE THE SENTENCE
IS A FAIR ONE. AND WE VERY MUCH
RESPECT HIS DECISION AND THE
CONSIDERATION HE GAVE THE CASE, FRANK.

I WOULD HAVE TO SECOND THAT. I HAVE
GREAT RESPECT FOR THE COURT AND HIS
DECISION. AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO
GETTING THIS BEHIND ME AND GETTING ON
WITH MY LIFE.

All those expressions of respect belay
the fact that neither side got what
they wanted.

The guidelines called for a sentence of
six to 12 months and a fine between two
and 20-thousand dollars.

The eight-month prison term falls a
little closer to the low end of the
guideline range...while the fine is
much nearer the high end.

Those were reactions to Jonathan
Falwell's speech to a new coalition of
Pastors for Family Values.

Falwell told the diverse group of
about 100- pastors from different
denominations, they can change politics
and American culture by changing lives.

Falwell took over as head pastor
of Thomas Road Baptist Church when his
father died back in May.

After getting whacked by Oklahoma
on Saturday - the Canes have decided to
goback to veteran Kyle Wright as their
starting quarterback.

Wright is in his fifth year at
Miami and he is 14-7 as a Miami's
starter. He replaces Kirby Freeman who

struggled mightily in his first two
games this season. Miami's passing
offense is virtually dead last in the
