those football players at Northside
High School. They show the skin problem
is NOT a drug resistant form of staph
infection-

A spokesman for the school says
nine students were tested.

All of the tests show that it's
unlikely that they have MRSA.

School officials believe the
problem is simply a skin irriation that
does not pose a risk to the rest of the
student body.

These results came just days
after the school sent a letter home to
the parents of the football team
warning that the skin irration could be
a contagious staph infection.

WE ARE TENDING TO SEE MORE EVIDENCE OF
MERSA IN THE COMMUNITY..THIS IS THE
MORE RESISTENT TYPE OF STAPH. THE POINT
IS PEOPLE HAVE TO REMEMBER IT'S VERY
EASY TO PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST.

(END SOT)

The best ways to protect yourself
are to wash your hands frequently,
avoid sharing personal items such as
towels or clothing, cover any open
wounds or cuts which provide a way for
the infection to enter the body, and
report any suspicious sores to your

doctor.

These are some pictures of what MRSA
looks like. Symptoms an include redness
or boils. But just because you come in
contact with the bacteria that doesn't
mean you'll develop an infection.

STAPH ON OUR SKIN AND IN OUR NOSE. SO
IT'S VERY COMMON GERM, UNFORTUNATELY
MOST HEALTHY PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO CARRY
IT AROUND WITHOUT GETTING SICK.

(END SOT)

The Virginia Department of Health does
not require individual cases to be
reported, only if its in a group of
people.

That's the only reason why health
officials were made aware of this most
recent situation at a local
school..even though it turned out not
to be the MRSA.
