Darkness had hidden the scale of the

impact - but daylight revealed the

widespread damage done by the twin
tremors.

The SECOND major earthquake in as many
days struck west of the Indonesian

island of Sumatra, triggering tsunami
warnings AGAIN, sending people fleeing

from the coast in countries as far away
as Africa.

Experts warned the quake had the
potential to unleash a destructive
tsunami

along coasts within 600 miles of the
epicenter.

The 7.8 quake was the largest of at
least 19 aftershock tremors following
the

world's most powerful earthquake this
year on Wednesday, which measured a

magnitude of 8.4.

At least nine people are dead and
hundreds have been injured...but
there's no

telling how many more victims may be
buried beneath the buildings.

ON CAMERA BRIDGE: CHARLIE
D'AGATA/LONDON

THE INITIAL QUAKE STRUCK HERE, JUST OFF
THE ISLAND OF SUMATRA...IT'S IN A

REGION KNOWN AS THE 'RING OF FIRE'
BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF SEISMIC
ACTIVITY

THERE.

FILE: LAST MONTH/PERU

That ring stretches to Peru...and as it
took a MONTH for the aftershocks to

die down from THAT quake last
month...tsunami experts expect the same
this

time around.

(phone interview with oceanographer
nathan becker/pre-fonted on screen

WE CAN'T SAY THERE'S GOING TO BE
ANOTHER MAGNITUDE EIGHT THIS WEEK OR
THIS

MONTH, BUT THIS IS AN AREA THAT WILL
HAVE LARGE EARTHQUAKES IN THE FUTURE.

EIGHT major earthquakes have rattled
the region SINCE the devastating
tsunami

of 2004 that killed almost quarter of a
million people....seismologists say

the next BIG one is not a case of 'if,'
but 'when.'

THE PRESIDENT IS EXPECTED TO ACCEPT HIS

TOP COMMANDER'S' RECOMENDATION THAT

TROOP LEVELS BE SCALED BACK TO
PRE-SURGE LEVELS - BUT FOR DEMOCRATS,
THAT'S

NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

(SOT Senator Harry Reid/D-NV FONT

EARLY): "It appears the president has
dug

in....His plan is simply more of the
same."

CALLING THE REDUCTION FAR SHORT OF WHAT
AMERICANS WANT, THE MAJORITY LEADER

VOWED TO ACT SOON TO STEP UP THE
PULLOUT.

(SOT Reid): "This is unacceptable to

me, it's unacceptable to the American

people."

Tara Mergener/Stand-Up

CRITICS ARGUE THAT RETURNING TO
PRE-SURGE TROOP LEVELS WAS ALWAYS THE
PLAN AND

THE COMMANDER'S RECOMENDATION IS REALLY
FOR NO CHANGE AT ALL.

(SOT Senator Jack Reed/D-RI): "That is

not I think a reaction to what is

happening on the ground. That is just
a function of the size of our army."

(natup reporter):

"General, are you feeling somewhat like
a celebrity this morning?"

(nat Petraeus): "No, not at all."

GENERAL PETRAEUS - FRESH OUT OF THE
SPOTLIGHT - MAINTAINS HE IS JUST
REACTING

TO CONDITIONS ON THE GROUND...AND THAT
THE DOOR FOR FURTHER DRAW-DOWNS REMAINS

OPEN.

(SOT General Petraeus/Top US Commander

in Iraq): "There will be continued

reductions but I can't at this point
predict the pace of those reductions."

(nats)

PETRAEUS' REPORT HAS BEEN A CONFIDENCE
BUILDER FOR THE PRESIDENT AND HIS

SUPPORTERS IN CONGRESS.

IF DEMOCRATS INSIST ON A HARDLINE
POSITION IN TRYING TO PASS ANTI-WAR

LEGISLATION, IT APPEARS THEIR EFFORTS

WILL BE DOOMED TO FAIL. Tara Mergener,
