Over the summer, crews turfed
the field and it got its first true
test during the Spartan's home opener
at Salem Stadium tonight.

In years past, the team has
pretty much played rain or shine but

with turf you no longer have a muddy
mess.

It also saves money because
Salem doesn't have to mow it anymore or
put down chemicals.

Not to mention, more teams can
now use the field.

Typically, only 3 games could be
played a week.

Now, the field can handle as
many as ten games a week.

(END VO) (END VO)

And as we saw tonight they can
play even in the rain. In fact, we're
told the field can take as much as two
inches of rain a hour.

So how can that be? Holly, we'll
show the mechanics behind it tonight on

nightmare on interstate 77 and 81 near
Wytheville all afternoon and most of
the night.

State Police say it all started
around 1:30 when a tractor trailer
jackknifed on southbound 77.

That led to an five car accident
a few minutes later in the backup.

Several hours later, there was
another accident, this one involving
four vehicles, on the northbound side
of 81.

Then, there was a hit and run
involving a drunk driver in the same
area.

Traffic is apparently still
backed up in the Wytheville area. It
could be several more hours before all
lanes are re-opened.
