GRAPHIC=FFE But let's begin with the one of

two big showdowns on the turf.

Friday Football Extra's top
ranked team - Amherst County - was home
last night hosting the number three
team in the Super 7 poll - George
Washington.

ENG#=4 VO-NAT
VO-NAT

*CG ffeloc Amherst Co.

George Washington vs. Amherst Co. The rain was heavy in Amherst :00 most of the night, but when you have
the Field Turf it doesn't matter.

In the first first quarter, GW's
T.J. Price makes the short pass to Zach
Gibson, and he will take the toss right
up the middle for a quick TD and

Amherst trails for the first time all
season. Eagles 7 and Lancers nothing
at that point.

But you cannot hold this Amherst
team down for long as Jon Moore takes
Peter Rose's handoff and he going to
hit the sideline and post a 12 yard
touchdown of his own and just like that
we are tied at 7-all.

GW would try to hollar right back
as Price passes up the middle of the
field again. He finds David Wilson,
who slips out of a tackle and rolls 45
yards into the endzone and the track
meet is on as the Eagles go toe to toe
with the Lancers and take a 14-to-7
lead.

Now in the second, Amherst's Rose
will flip the rock back to Moore and
this time he will scramble through the
middle for the 10 yard touchdown - his
second of the game. It's 14-to-13 GW
still on top.

Amherst would start to build up
some offensive rhythm. Rose fakes it
one way and then gives the ball to Josh
Braxton, who scores from the 7, and the
Lancers are now on top 21-to-14 after
the 2 point conversion.

*CG ffefinal George Washington

31 More Amherst. Rose pitches back Amherst Co. to Braxton who just plain outruns the 56 defense from the 25 yard line.

The Lancers trail early and win
big late - downing GW 56 to 31.

GRAPHIC=GILES/NARROWS A number of last night's

traditional rivalries were postponed by
the weather - games like Alleghany at
Covington and George Wythe at Floyd

But nothing could stop the battle
for bragging rights in Giles County as
Narrows made the short trip up Route
460 to take on the Giles Spartans.

ENG#=1 VO-NAT
VO-NAT

*CG ffeloc Pearisburg

Narrows vs. Giles Coach Steve Ragsdale was trying :00 to rally the troops after two
completely different emotional Friday
night to open up this his ____ season.

Giles is looking to score early

with the ball on the Green Wave 13, and
Junior Sheldon Douthat will take the
snap, slants right and he will pick up
five yards down to the eight for the
Spartans.

On the very next play - Douthat
will handoff to Hunter Williams, who
tucks it in, splits the seam and
strolls into the endzone for TD to put
the Spartans on top 7-to-nothing.

Giles would keep coming in the
opening half as Hunter Williams takes
the snap, bolts through the middle of
the line. He veers to the left and
picks up nice yardage before he's
knocked out of bounds at the 11.

The Spartans' Douthat would cap
off the drive by handing the rock to
Mario Jones and he will run in for the
11 yard score. Giles makes it look
easy - taking a 14-to-nothing on their
neighbors.

Giles would let Cody Journell get
into the act as well as he takes off
out of the single wing and smokes the
defense for 24 yards as the Spartans
controlled the scoreboard and clock in
this one. *CG ffefinal Narrows

6 The Spartans, this time from Giles their own 38 let Jounrell bust through 28 the line. He will pick up speed and
blockers as he goes all the way down
the left sideline for a 62 yard TD

Northside vs. Patrick Henry A constant drizzle didn't keep :00 the PH student section from racing the
decibels and supporting their
classmates.

Defense was the name of the game

in this one as Jordan Copper slams PH
quarterback Darren Thomas to the turf
on a third and long as the Vikes
defense looks stout.

The special teams would follow
suit early in the season as coach Burt
Torrence reaches into his bag of tricks
and pulls out this Brady Craft 26 yard
fake punt. The trickery will net a
first down at the PH 23 yard line.

That play would set up this
Jordan Downhour field goal from 23
yards out and Northside leads the
Patriots 3-to-nothing.

PH would catch a break of its own
on the final play of the first half as
Thomas scrambles and uncorks a prayer
into the middle of the field. The
football somehow finds Terrell Wilson
and the Patriots' *CG ffefinal Northside offense takes advantage of the 10 deflection as they score at the Patrick Henry halftime gun. 7-to-3 Patriots.

E.C. Glass vs. Jefferson Forest Jefferson Forest tried some
voodoo on the visiting Hilltoppers - a
little New Orleans style - and for the
most part it worked.

The Cavs first drive stalled on
the Glass 10, but Josh Storm boots a 27
yard field goal to put three points on
the board.

Glass would show a little voodoo
of its own as quarterback Joey Flores
hits B.J. Hurt for a 12 yard gain down
the Cavaliers 36 yard line.

Eight plays later, Glass would
match the Cavs' three as Michael Lang
kicks from the 15, and hits the field
goal to make it a three-all game.

In the second quarter - the
Toppers' Flores will hit Darnell Clark
on this screen pass and the two
willpick up 13 yards on the pitch and
catch, but it amounted to nothing.

Glass would later get the ball
back as the Topper special teams are
just that - blocking the Forest punt
and taking over in Cavaliers'
territory.

*CG ffefinal E.C. Glass The Toppers missed a chance at 23 another three but J-F still falls 23 to Jefferson Forest 17.

Blacksburg vs. Liberty It was soggy night in Bedford :00 County, as well, but at least the

to the house on this five yard run and
the Minutemen score with under a minute
to play to make it 14-to-6 Bruins at
the half.

Liberty's coaches were urging the
defense to step up and the members of
that squad would - big time. Watch six
foot five inch Boo Payne break up this
pass intended for Tyler Holmes.

Blacksburg would give up that
drive, but get the ball right back as
Fuquan Goode coughs up the wet pigskin
