became a crime scene.

Morva was being treated at the hospital
when police say he beat a deputy, took
his gun and Derrick's Pic shot and
killed security officer Derrick
McFarland.

scanned the woods...

But for more than 24 hours there was no

Not until 7am on August 21st... when
two Tech students spotted a man with a
sheet over his head walking on the
Huckleberry Trail. video of two girls
on the trail.

sheriff and he asked if we had seen
first Morva, then a guy walking in a
blanket.

The manhunt had spread to downtown
Blacksburg. Police with machine guns
ran through the streets and crouched
behind trees. And it would soon spread
onto the Virginia Tech campus.

aside" what they've learned outside the
courtroom, the judge may find them
qualified.

(END SOT) The capital murder trial of

Jeffrey Allen Thomas profoundly
affected the way juries are chosen in
Virginia and what judges must take into
account when they consider granting a
change of venue.

It's presumed that the defendant
will be tried where the crime occurred,
and it's up to the defense to
demonstrate prejudice in the local
community is so deep that the defendant
cannot get a fair trial there.

Widespread knowlegde of the case
alone is not enough to require moving
it.

In the Thomas case, the State
Supreme Court considered the content of
stories broadcast and published before
the trial...not just the amount of
publicity.

The court said the ease or
difficulty in finding impartial jurors
can help determine whether the
defendant can get a fair trial.

The court urged trial judges to
consider appearances, saying: "justice
must not only be fair, it must also be
above suspicion."

"The more difficult it is to seat

a jury," Justice Elizabeth Lacy wrote:
"the more likely it is that the public
will believe the judicial process [is]
tainted by prejudice."

killing Tara Munsey.

The jury gave him the death
penalty.

In light of the Supreme Court
opinion, the case was re-tried and
Thomas got life without parole the
second time.

years in prison for a murder in
Tennessee...

This morning, Lineberry
pled guilty to the murder of a school
security guard near Knoxville.

*CG locator Galax Investigators traced Lineberry's steps November 1 back to Galax, where they found
75-year-old Neal Hutton stabbed to
death.

Prosecutors here in Virginia
have said they intend to try Lineberry
on a capital murder charge in Galax.

downtown Roanoke this morning when it
struck an underground power line.

No one was injured, but the
incident forced evacuations and cut
electricity to a large part of downtown
Roanoke..

A contractor was drilling in the
parking lot of the Jefferson Motor
Lodge, when the equipment hit the power
line beneath the pavement.

When firefighters arrived, smoke
was billowing from the equipment, and
flames were visible underneath.

The motel was evacuated. So was
an office building across the street
after smoke travelled through a
conduit, and set off carbon monoxide
detectors there.

generator. For everyone else it should
be business as usual tonight. But that
certainly wasn't the case this
morning.

Residents of the Jefferson Motor
Lodge rushed from their rooms. So did
workers in the building that houses the
Western virginia Water Authority.

Jefferson Street was filled with
fire equipment, residents and office
workers were moved back several times
as a precaution.... as authorities shut
off gas lines to the building.

There were no injuries, but the
biggest impact appeared to be the power
outtage throughout a large part of
downtown for almost an hour.

A spokesman for Appalachian Power
says the outtage was necessary to put

the fire out... and prevent more
serious damage to the downtown grid.

Mark Warner has a strong early
advantage against either of the
Republicans considered most likely to
face him next year.

SurveyUSA asked 783 Virginia
voters over the weekend who they would
favor if the election was today.

NO SUPER last week in an on-line video that he
would run for the U-S Senate seat John
Warner is giving up.

In a matchup with another former
governor, 60 per cent said they favored
Warner, almost double the 32 per cent

Congressman Tom Davis .. 62 per cent
for Warner, 27 for Davis.

hard to believe that William Byrd
product Jeff Highfill is three games
into his senior season.

And like most college students
his age - the finality of his college
days - and the fast approaching real
world is becoming an eye opener.

Not so fast - before he hangs up
the helmet - Highfill has some
unfinished business on the field.

Bridgewater's run of five staight ODAC
titles was halted a season ago by W&L.

The Eagles have impressive in
their first three non-conference games
- and HIghfill has been virtually
flawless. He has completed 68 percent
of his passes and tossed 5 touchdowns,
and he's averaging over 6 yards a
carrry running the ball.

Highfill is the poster boy for
what's right at Bridgewater. Besides
his play on the field, he has a 3 point

95 Grade Point average as a Mathematics
major with a business minor.

Ultimately, he would like to defy
the logic and finish his career in
Salem this December in the 35th annual
Stagg Bowl.

Highfill and another area
quarterbac product Jake Lewis have
been part of making Bridgewater the
winningest program in the state since
2000. The Eagles have won 85 percent
of their games since the start of the
new century.

Tech is second, and the Hampton
Pirates are third.
